$24.93 - $30.28 Hourly

$4,322 - $5,250 Monthly

$51,864 - $63,000 Annually

$26.18 - $31.80 Hourly

$4,538 - $5,512 Monthly

$54,456 - $66,144 Annually

A 9.5% general salary increase will be applied effective July 2025.

The Utilities Customer Services and Business License Departments have an exciting opportunity available for an individual interested in joining the team as a Customer Service Representative. This position performs a variety of customer service functions in support of the City's utility billing, water, wastewater, and integrated waste operations, business license operations, and cashiering while maintaining frequent, positive interactions with the public and providing support for general billing, utility service, or business license inquiries.

The following procedures will apply

The City of Ontario reserves the right to accept only the first one hundred (100) qualified applications that meet the qualifications.

Completed applications will be reviewed and only qualified applicants whose qualifications best meet or exceed the requirements of the position and needs of the City will be invited to participate further in the selection process.

This recruitment will result in an eligibility list, which will be used to fill full-time and part-time vacancies within this classification. If part-time opportunities arise, part-time employees may be scheduled to work up to 29 hours per week and are not eligible to participate in the City's health insurance or retirement plans.

Examples of Essential Functions
  • Accepts payments by phone or in person; accurately enters payments, deposits, and notes to customer/business accounts; efficiently and accurately handles different tender type transactions; operates cash register system; verifies accuracy of payments to accounts and balances cash drawers as directed.
  • Performs mail-in payment processing; opens, reviews, scans, and processes mail-in payments in the City's customer information system or the cashiering system; reconciles payments received and processed and prepares the bank file for transmission.
  • Maintains customer services files and records; accurately enters, maintains, and updates customer/business license account information into the City's computerized system; prepares service orders for new sign-ups, turn on/off's, new and/or replacement equipment and related matters.
  • Interacts courteously with customers; takes payment over the counter; learns to interpret customer accounts and answers general customer account and service questions consistent with City policies, procedures, and Ontario's Municipal Code; follows up with customers regarding accounts, service orders, and information requests; provides customer receipts.
  • Arranges new utility service set up; updates customer information and documentation; calculates and collects utility customer deposits; collects fees for new meter and sewer connections; sets up construction accounts with hydrant meters. Learns and assists with processing business licenses; processing of past due customer accounts; assists in preparing delinquent bill reminders and past due notices.
  • Assists with special projects and assignments as requested.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualification Guidelines

Customer Service Representative I

Education: High School diploma or recognized equivalent.

Experience: One (1) year of customer service experience.

License: A valid California Class C driver license and an acceptable driving record at the time of appointment and throughout employment.

Special Requirements: Ability to type 40 words per minute.

Customer Service Representative II

Education: High School diploma or recognized equivalent.

Experience: Two (2) years of increasingly responsible customer service and clerical support experience, including experience using a computerized account billing or cashiering system.

License: A valid California Class C driver license and an acceptable driving record at the time of appointment and throughout employment.

Special Requirements: Ability to type 40 words per minute.
