DUTIES
The Curriculum Graphic Illustrator conceptualizes and creates graphic media assets for Open Learning courses and other on-campus groups. This position supports and collaborates with other media and production specialists. The position manages the development and implementation of graphic media assets and graphic designs for a variety of online environments and occasional print material. The Curriculum Graphic Illustrator supports Instructional Designers, subject matter experts, and other faculty and staff with a wide range of graphic media asset requests.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Based on a broad and in-depth knowledge of graphic media and institution standards, analyzes needs and makes recommendations to Instructional Designers, subject matter experts, faculty and staff on pedagogically sound graphic assets for online courses, programs and other educational offerings.
- Applies iterative design, user testing, and collaborative media production expertise to create a variety of graphic media asset deliverables for Open Learning and campus including discrete graphics, infographics, and website layouts.
- Finds, repurposes and/or develops open educational graphic media assets under Creative Commons and related regimes; makes recommendations and participates in the development of storage and content sharing tools with the use of metadata systems and repositories.
- Ensures that created media assets adhere to accessibility guidelines.
- Develops graphic specifications for creation of graphic media assets to enhance the learning material objectives of educational materials. Supports and collaborates with curriculum multimedia developer and video producer to achieve coordinated approaches to media development and implementation, provides assistance with basic multimedia and video tasks.
- Participates in course and program planning teams related to new development and maintenance of existing curriculum or other education focused projects, including handling of issues related to coordinating, scheduling and managing implementation of multiple projects under time-sensitive conditions.
- Operates in server environments for testing, production and hosting of graphic web designs, and communicates with technical server specialists concerning needs related to the smooth functioning and updating of host environments.
- Utilizes project-tracking software and participates in constant quality improvement of media team workflows related to the work of Instructional Design, Editing, Copyright and Production teams as well as campus clients.
- Participates in relevant conferences by attending and presenting on practices and emerging developments in Open Learning and educational media.

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
- Bachelor’s degree in related field such as Digital Media/Arts; Learning Technologies; Instructional Development; Information Technology
EXPERIENCE:
- 5 years of graphic illustration and web design experience, including:
- Three years’ experience in developing a wide range of graphic media assets
- Two years working in a complex development and production setting requiring strong project management and coordination skills
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES RELATED TO THE JOB
- Demonstrated ability to create and maintain a consistent and audience-appropriate standard of graphic illustration and design across web, print & multimedia materials
- Demonstrated ability to apply graphic design skills in the areas of Information Architecture and website usability including the development and documentation of clear navigational structures
- Demonstrated ability to illustrate and design for a broad range of subject matter.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly in speaking, writing, and with visual images
- Ability to formulate new concepts, create visuals, and implement sound graphic design including the production of content for, digital delivery methods and print reproduction
- Ability to coordinate multiple projects with tight deadlines and changing priorities
- Ability to develop clear instructional material
- Ability to interact well with colleagues and team members
- Ability to exercise sound decision making and judgment
- Ability to organize, coordinate, and attend to fine detail
- Ability to employ advanced level skills in Adobe Creative Cloud suite MS Word, knowledge of Camtasia, HTML, CSS and some programming skills
- Familiarity with WordPress, H5P, Articulate Storyline.
- Familiarity with HTML5 and CSS
- Ability to employ advanced computer skills and knowledge on either a Mac or a PC operating system. Must have the ability to employ basic computer skills on the alternate operating system

The salary for the above position is determined by the Collective Agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 4879, as it presently exists.
Pay Band
$32.12 - $35.69 ( CUPE Grade 09 (90% - 100%) )
Salary rate
Please Note: This position may be subject to a 90% salary for the first 560 hours of employment.
