Job summary

A regional educational institution in St. Catharines is seeking a Designated Early Childhood Educator focused on Kanyen’keha language. Responsibilities in this position will include, but are not limited to, the following :

Partner / collaborate With The Classroom Teacher

• to implement the Kindergarten program expectations and to address all children's identified strengths, needs, and stages of development and interests;
• to observe, assess, and document the developmental and academic growth of children in the Kindergarten Program;
• to co-create pedagogical documentation to consolidate and extend learning, and to share the documentation with children, families, and colleagues;
• to plan and support developmentally appropriate learning opportunities which will foster growth across the four frames of learning, within a play-based environment;
• to contribute to an effective team approach in the delivery of a successful Kindergarten program;
• to develop and maintain effective written, oral, non-verbal and electronic communication with families, coworkers, administrators, and individuals / agencies;
• to co-create and embed accommodations and / or modifications, as stated in a child's Individual Education Plan (IEP);
• to nurture positive social and emotional experiences which contribute to developing skills such as sharing, problem solving and cooperation;
• to co-create and adjust the conditions necessary to support learning and developmental growth (e.g.,
• environment, flow of the day);
• to maintain a safe and caring environment, and build positive relationships with all stakeholders;
• to administer first aid as required;
• to assist children in daily routines, dressing and nutritional breaks throughout the day;
• to maintain all appropriate records for children;
• to participate in school-based meetings and professional development (PD) activities;
• to demonstrate behaviour that is professional, ethical, and responsible; and,
• serve as an informal liaison between the school / families / Indigenous communities, providing support with integrating Indigenous perspectives into the school environment;
• Develop and deliver engaging Mohawk / Kanyen’keha lessons to learners of various ages and proficiency levels during fitness and nutrition breaks. Facilitate Kanyen’keha language enrichment activities with students in gr. 1 - 8, incorporating cultural elements where appropriate, with a particular focus on students transitioning from the Head Start program;
• all other duties, as assigned under the direction of the Principal (or designate).

Skills, Qualifications And Education Requirements

• Have a strong command of Kanyen’keha, and ideally experience teaching Kanyen’keha;
• Have deep understanding of Indigenous cultures, languages, and histories;
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trusting relationships with students, staff, and families;
• Commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive educational environment for Indigenous students;
• Two year community college Early Childhood Education Diploma;
• At least six months childcare experience in an educational and / or family support program (i.e., PFLC or OEYC);
• Proof of current registration and a member in good standing with the Ontario College of Early Childhood Educators;
• Thorough knowledge of the Ministry of Education’s Kindergarten Program and related legislation and resources (i.e., ELECT, "How Does Learning Happen?"), Board policies and procedures;
• Ability to communicate in a sensitive, courteous manner with children, parents, staff and the general public;
• Proven ability to follow policies and procedures in an appropriate and timely manner;
• Understanding and commitment to confidentiality;
• Proven ability to deal with classroom management and emergency situations and to take appropriate actions based on established Board policies and procedures;
• Computer skills and strong organization / time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines;
• Must be able to physically assist children as required;
• Standard First Aid / CPR certifications and a fundamental knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act would be an asset in these positions;
• Completion of all required on-line training.
