Position Summary

Job Type: Permanent, full-time

Hours of Work: 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, Monday - Friday

Reporting to: Culture and Heritage Manager

Reporting to the Culture & Heritage Manager, the Language and Culture Coordinator provides ɬaʔamɩn cultural programming and organizes and supports ʔayʔaǰuθəm language revitalization within t̓išosəm and the qat̓ᶿɛt region.

Key Responsibilities

Key responsibilities of the Language and Culture Coordinator include but are not limited to the following:

  • Organizing and/or leading a wide variety of cultural activities, projects, and workshops for the ɬaʔamɩn community.
  • Being a resource person related to ɬaʔamɩn culture for the broader qat̓ᶿɛt region.
  • Helping to organize elders, knowledge keepers, speakers, and community members to respond to requests for the sharing of ɬaʔamɩn stories, protocols, and practices within the qat̓ᶿɛt region.
  • Working with community organizations within the qat̓ᶿɛt region to support and/or offer cultural enhancement activities and learning opportunities for children, youth, and adults to promote awareness and appreciation of Indigenous ways of being and knowing (ex. sharing cultural songs, drumming, stories, crafts, and ʔayʔaǰuθəm in classrooms and school events).
  • *Mentoring with the Nation’s Culture and Heritage Manager will be possible, as needed.
  • Providing community-based support for language learners to promote and facilitate use of ʔayʔaǰuθəm.
  • Creating and maintaining culture and language resources.
  • Collaborating with the Language Coordinator to administer language programs.
  • Co-planning and leading regular working group meetings.
  • Works with Sister Nations on language revitalization initiatives.
  • Collaborating with a team of Nation staff, elders, fluent speakers, and community members in the development of a long-range community language plan.
  • Collaborating on writing of grant proposals to secure partnerships and funding for culture and language initiatives.
  • Assistance with meal prep or coordination of meals for cultural programming.
  • Attending meetings as directed.
  • Other duties as directed.

Qualifications

Training, Knowledge, Experience

  • Extensive knowledge of and experience with ɬaʔamɩn cultural practices and protocols.
  • Knowledge of ʔayʔaǰuθəm.
  • Relationship with ɬaʔamɩn elders and knowledge keepers.
  • A minimum of two years of experience delivering cultural programming in group settings.
  • Experience writing in an academic or professional context would be an asset.
  • Experience representing the ɬaʔamɩn community in various contexts would be an asset.
  • Acceptable Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Class 5 B.C. Driver’s License and acceptable Driver’s Abstract.

Skills, Abilities

  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to speak in public or willingness to develop this ability.
  • Intermediate computer skills including MS Office and ability to create promotional materials.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to respect and meet expected deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as part of a team.

Working Conditions

  • Work hours are generally Monday to Friday 8:30 to 4:30 with a one hour paid lunch break. Some adjustment to scheduled hours will be required based on programming needs.
  • Work will take place both in an office as well as in a variety of environments within the community and region.
