Job description

Business Unit: Metlakatla First Nation (MFN)
Location: Metlakatla, British Columbia
Reporting to: CLH Director

Metlakatla First Nation is seeking a full-time Culture, Language, and Heritage (CLH) Coordinator for a one-year term assignment with the possibility for an extension dependent on department funding. The CLH Coordinator will support the CLH department and implement the 2024-2028 work plan, projects, and budget, as well as enhance resources, supporting the development and implementation of policies related to culture, language, and heritage at Metlakatla. Responsibilities include community outreach, Sm'algyax language education, research, fieldwork, and data management. Collaboration with Community Members and various stakeholders and support for long-term funding are essential.

Responsibilities:

  • Execute and implement the CLH Department 2024-2028 work plan, projects, and budget to meet strategic goals and priorities as directed by the CLH Director
  • Review and implement existing resources, programs, and policies at Metlakatla that relate to culture, language, and heritage
  • Develop and implement opportunities for community input, community outreach, and build awareness of the developing Department's purpose, goals, services, and accomplishments
  • Develop and implement opportunities for Sm'algyax language and cultural education
  • Assist with the development and implementation of culture and heritage policies for the Department
  • Conduct ethnographic, archaeological, and traditional use research
  • Participate in culture, heritage, and archival training as required
  • Participate in culture and heritage fieldwork from time to time
  • Inventory, digitize, and archive culture and heritage information and data as required
  • Work with other Metlakatla Departments, organizations, external culture and heritage stakeholders, and community members to meet the Department's mandate
  • Work with the CLH Director and staff to develop processes and strategies to maximize Metlakatla Member involvement and capacity building for the long-term execution of the Department's mandate
  • Maintain documents and other related materials to the Department
  • Support the CLH Director in pursuing long-term funding opportunities for the Department
  • Assist with the tasks associated with oversight of the team and department operations when the CLH Director is absent

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to speak clearly and persuasively in both formal and informal settings, from community meetings to public events
  • Knowledge of current issues facing Indigenous communities, including cultural revitalization, land rights, and language preservation
  • Comfortable working in a community setting directly with Community Members and Elders
  • Comfortable sharing and discussing current issues facing Indigenous communities regarding cultural revitalization, land rights, and language preservation
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and timelines
  • Ability to work individually with little supervision and as part of a dynamic team
  • Hard-working with the ability to deliver multiple projects within tight time constraints
  • Proficiency in the use of current office productivity software (Microsoft Office suite of products)
  • Stronger written and verbal communication skills

Competencies and Qualifications:

  • Deep knowledge of the cultural practices, ceremonies, and values of the community
  • Knowledge of proper cultural protocols and etiquette for events, particularly in Indigenous ceremonies
  • Experience leading and working with a team of volunteers to run programs and events is an asset
  • Post-Secondary Diploma in Indigenous Studies and/or a related field is an asset, but not a requirement
  • Please note that personal and lived cultural experience is valuable concerning this role

Working Conditions:

  • Location on-site at Metlakatla, BC
  • Some travel throughout the Metlakatla and Prince Rupert communities is required
  • Exposure to culturally sensitive topics
  • Some outdoor work as needed

  • Criminal Record Check with a satisfactory result
  • Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Follow Metlakatla First Nations' policies and procedures

The wage range is $28.00 – $32.00 per hour
Work hours: 35 hours per week
Schedule: Monday to Thursday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm and Friday from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm
