Metroland Media is a progressive media organization with a long and distinguished history. Our businesses include six regional daily publications and more than 20 news sites in Ontario. The Hamilton Spectator is looking for an enthusiastic, experienced full-time Culture Editor to lead culture coverage in Hamilton for both digital and print platforms.

The Culture Editor must be knowledgeable about arts, food, trends and the general culture scene in Hamilton. The successful candidate will be a talented self-starter who can identify, assign and edit a wide range of stories on compelling topics for Hamilton Spectator and thespec.com readers. They must be able to generate content that serves as a guide for readers who want to be in the know about the culture scene. They should have demonstrated ability to work on tight deadlines, think creatively, and collaborate with reporters while providing direction. They must also be able to form connections with key community members and attend special events.

Salary $84,296.69

Key responsibilities
  • Rewriting and editing a broad range of content.
  • Providing constructive feedback to reporters and improving the quality and clarity of copy written for print and web.
  • Generating story ideas that drive readership.
  • Staying on top of the culture scene in Hamilton.
  • Producing stories which include photo and video where required, and posting to web.
  • Writing social media posts.
  • Editing copy for style, language usage, flow and logical presentation of information.
  • Slotting print pages, as well as working with web files.
  • Demonstrating cultural awareness and sensitivity.
  • Upholding and contributing to Metroland editorial's best practices.
  • Understanding and flagging libel and defamation.
  • Maintaining and updating tracking documents.
  • Working on statutory holidays, early mornings, evenings and/or weekends as required.
Qualifications
  • Degree or diploma in journalism or a related field, including English or communications, or other relevant experience.
  • At least two years of recent experience in a digital news environment.
  • Proficient with content management systems and SEO best practices.
  • Superb news judgment and a sharp eye for detail.
  • Knowledge of Canadian Press Style. Knowledge of Torstar style is an asset.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to adhere to a common standard.
  • An engaged consumer of news with a passion for words and strong rewriting abilities.
  • Proven ability to work quickly and decisively in a deadline-driven news environment.
  • Ability to work individually and in a team environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
