Job description

About this opportunity

The Crude Product Quality Specialist provides enterprise technical and commercial leadership for crude oil, condensate and other petroleum-product quality. The role protects and enhances value from wellhead to final market by optimizing quality, blending and equalization outcomes; ensuring products meet contractual, pipeline, terminal and industry specifications; and resolving off-spec, measurement and quality disputes. Responsibilities include technical advisory, commercial agreement support, quality modelling, sampling and testing protocols, and industry representation. The successful candidate combines deep petroleum-quality expertise with commercial judgment, strong analytical capability and the ability to influence across functions without formal authority.

What you’ll do

Provide enterprise subject‑matter expertise for petroleum quality across upstream, midstream and downstream interfaces, with a primary focus on crude oil and condensate. Translate product quality parameters into commercial value and risk, identifying opportunities to optimize blending, treating, storage, equalization and market acceptance. Develop and maintain corporate quality standards, targets, blend models, equalization methodologies, sampling protocols and testing requirements. Provide technical guidance to traders, schedulers, optimization teams and operations, including review of product assays, certificates of analysis, new supply and treatment options. Support the development and interpretation of commercial agreements, ensuring product‑quality requirements and specifications are technically and commercially sound. Lead investigations into off‑spec products, measurement issues and quality disputes, including root‑cause analysis, corrective actions and oversight of third‑party equalization calculations. Provide clear recommendations on product quality, testing, blending and corrective actions, escalating matters requiring financial, operational, contractual or regulatory approval as appropriate. Represent Cenovus on relevant industry technical committees and support company‑wide and cross‑border quality matters across multiple commodities, assets and third‑party logistics systems.

Who you are
  • Legally authorized to work in Canada
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Science, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 12 years of directly relevant petroleum industry experience, with significant accountability for crude oil or product quality.
  • P.Eng. designation, MBA or other relevant advanced education is considered an asset.
  • Deep knowledge of petroleum specifications, sampling and testing methods, assays, blending, equalization, measurement, product treatment, and quality provisions within commercial transportation agreements.
  • Established industry credibility, including experience with technical committees and commercial contract development.
  • Strong understanding of oil and gas physical flows and interfaces across pipeline, terminal, rail, truck and marine transportation.
  • Demonstrated ability to investigate off‑spec and measurement issues, conduct root‑cause analysis, translate technical findings into commercial impacts, and influence senior internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical, financial, negotiation and communication skills, with the ability to organize and prioritize complex work independently in a fast‑paced environment.
