Position Overview
Reporting to the Manager, Innovation and Learning, the Creative Technology Coordinator’s primary responsibility is to lead the efficient planning and operation of the Library’s digital creation spaces (i.e. StoryLab and the growth and extension of its services, as well as potential Makerspaces). In addition to providing leadership in advancing digital literacy and creative technology initiatives; ensures alignment with the Library’s strategic vision; guides system-wide initiatives related to emerging technologies, staff capacity building and service innovation.

What you’ll be doing
In addition to the primary tasks noted above, aspects of the role will also include:
- Lead the day-to-day operation of StoryLab, including coordinating, planning, scheduling, assigning, reviewing and supervising the work of Creative Technology Advisors; determine work requirements, priorities and the best use of resources for operations.
- Act as a key decision-maker in the operational management and strategic growth of creative technology services.
- Make recommendations and lead, create and implement plans, projects and outreach initiatives in alignment with strategic directions.
- Lead and monitor progress of plans, projects or initiatives; identify issues; propose solutions; and report on milestones.
- Provide leadership in evaluating service outcomes and make data-informed decisions to enhance digital services.
- Initiate and work with staff to develop and effectively communicate new processes and procedures for system-wide services; ensure that staff are trained and able to communicate effectively with internal and external contacts.
- Provide mentoring and coaching to staff to foster a culture of innovation, learning and collaboration.
- Provide support to patrons navigating the digital environment, in accordance with applicable policies and procedures.
- Develop, maintain and provide guides and instructional aides; oversee curation of content for digital resources on online platforms.
- Provide direction and monitor the maintenance of the inventory of hardware, including cataloguing equipment, monitoring equipment for damage and managing replacement and warranty claims. Lead Troubleshooting of library equipment and related software updates.
- Participate in the research, development and delivery of new digital services offerings, such as recording studios; make recommendations for new software tools and equipment; keep abreast of emerging trends in digital tools and technologies.
- Serve as a technology thought-leader within the organization and represent the library in external professional networks or initiatives.
- Provide research, referral and advisory services for both internal and external clients; provide operating instructions on the use of library facilities, technology and services; interpret library policy to the public. Respond to patron feedback and escalate as required.
- Compose and/or prepare a variety of correspondence, statistical and operational reports.
- Contribute with members of the management team and participate in long-term planning, service model evaluations and decision-making affecting library-wide operations.
- Perform related work as required.
What you’ll need to succeedGraduation from University in a relevant discipline, successful completion of MLS / MLIS from an accredited library school; completion of courses in information sciences, plus considerable related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
It’s great if you have
- Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of librarianship and of the objectives, organization and procedures of the Library.
- Considerable knowledge of digital software and hardware equipment used in the work.
- Sound knowledge and understanding of current and emerging digital technology.
- Sound knowledge of the principles related to intellectual freedom, inclusiveness and service excellence.
- Ability to plan, organize and evaluate projects and outreach initiatives in alignment with strategic directions.
- Ability to coordinate, plan, schedule, assign, review and supervise the work of subordinates; lead projects and coordinate the work of others as required.
- Ability to coach, develop and empower staff to foster innovation and excellence in service delivery.
- Ability to lead cross-functional teams, contribute to interdepartmental projects and support strategic and operational decision-making at a system-wide level.
- Ability to provide leadership and responsibility for oversight of services, spaces and resources.
- Ability to recommend changes in service delivery and participate in the development of library policies and procedures.
- Ability to serve as a team lead in coordinating cross-system programs or services and to coach staff to support the provision of excellent service.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, community organizations, groups and the general public.
The hourly pay rate for this unionized position starts at $42.45 (2024 rates), based on a 35-hour workweek, plus a generous benefits package. This work requires flexible availability, including evenings and weekend shifts.
