The Esquimalt Graving Dock (EGD) is the largest non-military hard bottomed drydock on the west coast of the Americas and is located at the south end of Vancouver Island at Esquimalt Harbour, in the Greater Victoria region. It is a federally owned and operated ship repair facility and is unique in that it operates as an "open access" "multi-user" facility. The terms "open access" "multi-user" describes a facility that provides common services (on a fee-for-service basis) to various commercial ship repair firms and provides access to dry dock infrastructure for a wide range of coastal and ocean-going vessels. Its principal stakeholders are the vessel owners that rely on the facility for repair, maintenance, and refit. This includes the Royal Canadian Navy, the Canadian Coast Guard and BC Ferries, as well as many foreign and private vessel owners (including cruise ship lines) that regularly use the facility. There are approximately 2000 personnel working on the grounds of the facility at any one time.
