Job Summary

The Role

As a Community Integration Specialist, you will be working from the Culturally Supportive Housing sites and office of the Aboriginal Coalition to End Homelessness Society (ACEH), delivering services and working in collaboration to build effective relationships within the Indigenous community. You will work with individuals who may have mental health and substance use challenges, and who may be at risk of losing their housing or experiencing homelessness. You will consider each individual’s unique needs and cultural wellness when making decisions and advocating and liaising on their behalf. This role provides a unique opportunity to support the Indigenous Street Family as well as those in Culturally Supportive Housing and housed independently in the private rental market. This role will support across the ACEH's four Culturally Supportive Housing sites including Kwum Kwum Lelum (House of Courage), SpeqƏȠéutxʷ (SPAKEN), XEXE PAHLATSIS LELUM (Sacred Cradle House) and the Youth House, as well as four programs based out of the Douglas Street office: Outreach, CAIS, Land-Based Healing and YEK’AUTW (Justice).

About the ACEH

The ACEH is a non-profit and registered charitable organization whose sole focus is to support Indigenous peoples experiencing homelessness. The work of the ACEH is centered on the voices of Indigenous peoples who have shared their immediate needs, lived experiences, and perspectives on solutions. Through building partnerships locally and island-wide, the ACEH works to identify and address systemic and structural barriers, share information, resources, and lessons learned, while also providing cultural supports, connections, and housing stability. The role of the ACEH is critical because there is not another Indigenous led organization on Vancouver Island that has ending Indigenous homelessness as its sole focus. The ACEH has a vision to lead long-term systemic change to better meet the needs of our people living away from home and experiencing homelessness.

To lovingly provide culturally supportive, affordable housing and services that end Indigenous homelessness on Vancouver Island.

Qualifications:

• Secondary school graduation and 3 years related experience*; OR
• Evergreen Certificate and 4 years related experience*; OR
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

*Related experience must include at least two of the following and can be gained in either a community/volunteer or employment/customer service capacity:

• Providing services to Indigenous people who are living in poverty and may be experiencing homelessness.
• Providing services Indigenous people who are experiencing mental health and/or substance use challenges.
• Providing services to people with disabilities.
• Experience of Urban Indigenous Resources.

Preference may be given to applicants who have one or more of the following:

• In recognition of the critical importance to this role of a lived understanding of Indigenous communities, history, values and cultural competencies, preference may be given to applicants of First Nations, Métis, or Inuit ancestry. Where Indigenous candidates possess equivalent qualifications, consideration may be given to members of the Esquimalt, Songhees, and W̱SÁNEĆ Nations in recognition of the Nations on whose territories the ACEH is based.
• Experience working in a community-based role (i.e., outreach worker, shelter worker, health care worker, social worker, etc.)
• Experience working in community organizations, BC Friendship Centres, and/or with multiple service providers
• Direct or indirect lived experience of addiction, poverty, homelessness, or mental health challenges.
• Experience using a trauma-informed approach to client service.

About this Position:

This position has full time on-site requirements. An eligibility list may be established for future temporary and/or permanent vacancies in Victoria and will be utilized exclusively by the Community Integration Services Branch. Successful applicants will be required to physically work in Victoria and will not be eligible to be placed elsewhere in the province by virtue of this competition. The Service Delivery Division provides a flexible work environment with many unique benefits, including a scheduled day off every two weeks. Enhanced Security Screening will be required. Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
