Position Overview
The Counsellor, Substance Use - Woodstock Hospital will provide rapid response to individuals seen at Woodstock General Hospital who can be appropriately referred for addiction and mental health-related concerns.
This clinical position offers crisis intervention, brief transitional case management, system navigation, counselling, and addiction treatment. You will collaborate with community-based addiction and mental health services to reduce avoidable, unnecessary, and repeat emergency department visits.

What We Offer
- Starting salary is $30.01 per hour (Level 1 of the Direct Service, Regulated Professional Grid); successful external applicants will start at Level 1, with progression up to Level 8, $37.26 per hour.
- Work schedule: 70 hours biweekly, Monday to Friday, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm.
- Pension plan: Immediate enrollment in the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP).
- Benefits: After a 90-day waiting period, extended healthcare benefits are available.
How You Will Make a Difference
- Provide face-to-face and virtual entry/first contact/intake services, including clinical conferencing.
- Offer intervention and short-term support during addiction or mental health crises.
- Facilitate early linkages with internal programs or external agencies, coordinating information and providing case management until linkages are established.
- Conduct screening and assessment of mental health and addiction issues.
- Refer clients to appropriate addiction resources and social/health services based on their needs and preferences.
- Implement harm reduction and abstinence strategies aligned with client goals.
- Provide discharge planning, support, and navigational assistance based on client capacity.
- Share information about health and community services and facilitate client linkage.
- Conduct assessments, develop treatment plans, make referrals, advocate, and provide community education for individuals concerned about substance use.
- Facilitate community treatment groups as appropriate.
- Manage caseloads and meet clinical service requirements, including administrative duties.
- Engage in community development, awareness, education, and outreach activities.
Application Requirements
Police Vulnerable Sector Check
Applicants must have a recent PVSC (within six months). Early application for this check is encouraged to avoid delays.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in a related field (e.g., SSW, BSW, MSW, diploma in addictions); original credentials required during hiring.
- Registration and good standing with relevant Ontario colleges (e.g., Social Workers, Nurses, Psychotherapists, Occupational Therapists).
- Current PVSC.
- Demonstrated regular attendance at work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Crisis or suicide intervention training.
- Experience with system navigation, care planning, discharge planning, and the Transitional Discharge Model.
- Experience in recovery-focused practice and addiction treatment.
- Knowledge of serious mental illnesses and services in Oxford County.
- Bilingual in both official languages of Canada (preferred).
