Job description

Join the HRPA as Counsel, Regulatory and Policy

Help Shape the Future of Human Resources in Ontario!

The Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA) promotes and protects the public interest by governing and regulating the practice of human resource professionals across Ontario. Our mission is to enhance the knowledge, skill, and proficiency of HR professionals who drive economic growth, elevate workplace talent, and contribute to safe, fair, and thriving work environments.

We are seeking a lawyer with a background in professional regulation to play a key role in developing and implementing policies and processes that support high standards of HR practice.

Role Overview

As Counsel, Regulatory and Policy, you will be a pivotal member of the HRPA. Leveraging your experience in professional regulation, you will enhance our practices, policies, and processes; provide legal support and advice; and develop resources for HR professionals.

This role is ideal for a legal professional who enjoys a varied workload, balancing regulatory operations with policy development and legal advisory work — and who is passionate about impacting workplaces in Ontario and beyond.

Key Responsibilities

  • Regulatory Oversight & Compliance: Act or advise on regulatory matters, including complaints and appeals.
  • Policy Development & Implementation: Lead improvements to the HRPA’s regulatory policies and practices.
  • Legal Advisory Work: Provide guidance on contracts, legislative changes, and case law.
  • Process Optimization: Identify and implement efficiencies in regulatory operations.
  • Training & Knowledge Sharing: Develop and deliver training for committees and staff on legal reasoning, decision writing, and bias.
  • Member Engagement & Education: Create legal content for newsletters, website resources, and professional development to keep HR professionals informed about legal obligations and law changes related to labour and employment.

What You Bring

  • JD (called to the Ontario Bar) with 2 to 7 years of legal experience, including at least 1 year advising or working within a regulatory body.
  • A belief in the importance of professional regulation and a growth mindset.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining high-quality work.
  • A proactive, adaptable approach committed to excellence, objectivity, and ethical decision-making.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience handling complaints or disciplinary matters at a regulatory body.
  • Experience in labour or employment law.

Why This Role?

  • Make a lasting impact by shaping the HR profession in Ontario.
  • Combine legal expertise with strategic influence in an organization dedicated to public interest and professional excellence.
  • Engage in diverse legal work, from regulatory compliance to policy innovation and contract law.
  • Work with a team that values integrity, excellence, and continuous improvement.

Why the HRPA?

  • Be an architect of HR’s future in Ontario, influencing workplace standards and ethics.
  • Collaborate with a dedicated team focused on professional excellence and public service.
  • Work in an environment where legal knowledge has real-world impact.
