Job summary

The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) is seeking a Corporate Practice Advisor who evaluates permit holders and licensed professionals for adherence to professional, legal and ethical obligations.

Reporting to the Supervisor, Corporate Practice, you will advise stakeholders including the public, staff, permit holders and licensed professionals, promoting self-regulation and safeguarding the public trust in Alberta’s engineering and geoscience practice.

Reports To: Supervisor, Corporate Practice

Position Summary

Reporting to the Supervisor, Corporate Practice, the Corporate Practice Advisor is responsible to evaluate whether APEGA permit holders and their licensed professionals understand and comply with their professional, legal and ethical obligations.

As a professional practice ambassador of APEGA, the incumbent is an advisor to stakeholders including: the Public, APEGA staff, Licensed Professionals, and Permit Holders. Focused on protection of the public and maintaining the public’s trust and confidence in APEGA, the Advisor works with Permit Holders to exercise self-regulation by providing guidance and advice on permit to practice issues as required. The Advisor assists APEGA Staff, Statutory Boards and Committees, and Council on regulatory matters and assures the health of engineering and geoscience practice in Alberta.

In addition, the Corporate Practice Advisor is a "subject matter expert" on the practice of engineering and geoscience, providing support to the Corporate Practice team, Director, Professional Practice, the Practice Review Board (PRB) and its subcommittees, to provide updates and professional practice expertise and advice as required.

Responsibilities
  • Manage Practice Reviews of Permit Holders to assess the permit holder and their licensed professionals’ practice alignment with the EGP Act, General Regulations, and APEGA Standards, Bulletins and Guidelines by:
    • Planning and executing Permit Holder practice reviews.
    • Provide recommendations on the status of permit holders practice reviews to the PRB and its subcommittees to allow timely self-regulation decisions as per APEGA policy and processes.
    • Develop, implement, and maintain processes and contribute to policies for initiating, executing, and finalizing permit holders practice reviews.
    • Develop and manage professional practice databases to allow progress reporting and performance measurement.
    • Develop and maintain tools, templates, and standardized letters to ensure consistent execution of, and communication regarding practice reviews and practice standards.
    • Contribute to the continual improvement of data access for the Practice Review Team.
  • Provide subject matter expertise on professional practice matters related to the EGP Act or other applicable legislation, APEGA General Regulations and By-Laws, and APEGA Practice Standards and Guidelines: to provide timely advice, training, and solutions to Permit Holders, Licensed Professionals, Staff, Statutory Boards and Committees other national and provincial engineering and geoscience associations by:
    • Providing accurate and consistent advice and information regarding the professional and ethical aspects of the practice of engineering and geoscience.
    • Providing timely and well researched responses to any questions or inquiries from the Public, Permit Holders or Licensed Professionals on permit holder practice reviews and professional and practice standards and guidelines.
    • Providing excellent customer service that reflects positively on APEGA.
    • Providing recommendations, updates and support to the Practice Review Board and its subcommittees to facilitate timely professional practice decisions. Supporting actions are:
      • Attending PRB and sub-committee meetings to provide updates on, and insights into, permit holders’ and licensed professionals’ engineering or geoscience practice.
      • Providing research and information to support goals and objectives of the PRB and its subcommittees.
      • Developing and reporting on key process indicators.
      • Providing information and act as a knowledge resource on general matters of policy to the PRB, and other related sub-committees on APEGA Standards, Guidelines and EGP Act and Regulations pertinent to professional practice of engineering and geoscience professions.
      • Recommending and implementing changes or additions to departmental policies and PRB policy or processes.
  • Delivering and contributing to the development of regulatory professional development material that educates licensed professionals and permit holders on regulatory process and professional obligations.
    • Permit to Practice presentations, online courses and audience-specific material focused on improving licensed professional, permit holder and other stakeholders’ understanding of the professional responsibilities of APEGA members.

  • Strong familiarity with engineering and/or geoscience requirements across several industry sectors or disciplines, as well as experience as an authenticating professional, in operations or in consulting.

  • Knowledge of the principles of self-regulation and the legislated authorities of regulators, especially those related to APEGA (EGP Act, Regulations, By-Laws and APEGA Standards and Guidelines)

Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer or Geoscientist registered with APEGA.
  • 10+ years of broad engineering or geoscience related experience—exposure to multiple industry sectors or cross-functional roles that demonstrate breadth of professional practice
  • Familiarity with APEGA legislation, the EGP Act, General Regulations, and Practice Standards is an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal awareness, with the ability to build trust, foster respectful relationships, and engage effectively with diverse stakeholders, even in challenging or high-stakes conversations
  • Proven ability to navigate complex stakeholder environments, balancing regulatory requirements with practical, solution-oriented guidance
  • Equivalencies may be considered.
