Job summary

CBC North is seeking an experienced copy editor to join our digital team in the English Services. You will write, edit and package copy for CBC North’s digital platforms, ensuring accuracy, clarity and engaging headlines.

Reporting to the senior producer of digital, you will lead editorial decisions, mentor journalists, and uphold CBC’s standards while delivering timely content across news, features and social channels in a fast‑paced newsroom.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in a fast‑paced, daily multi‑platform news environment.
  • Strong understanding of CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices and related legal/ethical issues.
  • Experience copy editing for digital & social platforms, including fact‑checking and packaging.
  • Knowledge of CBCNews.ca style is a plus.

  • Work with writers and editors to ensure content meets high editorial standards including accuracy, structure, story flow and context.

CBC North is looking for an experienced journalist to join our digital team as a copy editor.

Reporting to the senior producer of digital, the successful candidate will ensure the accurate and efficient delivery of content to CBC’s digital and social platforms. You will write and edit copy, craft sharp headlines that engage audiences and package multimedia content to enrich the audience experience.

You will be an editorial leader with keen news judgment, high standards and an uncompromising attention to detail. You will be comfortable making independent editorial decisions in accordance with the CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices, ensuring our work upholds the principles of accuracy, fairness, balance, impartiality and integrity, and you are familiar with the legal issues that can arise in news coverage.

You will put audience needs at the centre of your decision‑making, ensuring our news content connects our audiences to the news they need to know, the stories that affect their lives and the issues that resonate in their communities. You will strive to broaden the range of perspectives and experiences reflected in our news content, especially those from people who have been traditionally underrepresented in the media.

As an experienced mentor, you are a thoughtful coach and collaborative team player, someone who deeply enjoys helping journalists develop their writing skills and produce content of the highest quality.

This role requires full‑time on‑site presence in Iqaluit, Yellowknife or Whitehorse.

Hours of Work: 12:00pm‑8:45pm

Your Responsibilities
  • Copy edit breaking, enterprise and feature news content, as well as multimedia projects, newsletters, social media copy, video titles and photo descriptions.
  • Work with writers and editors to ensure content meets high editorial standards including identifying and fixing issues related to accuracy, structure, story flow and context, as well as maintaining consistency in style.
  • Write compelling headlines that drive audience interest and engagement.
  • Quickly write breaking news and curate website lineups as needed.
  • Build and package digital stories with multimedia content
  • Monitor news developments to maintain content on CBC North’s website that reflects the latest news and varied content of interest to our audiences.
  • Provide coaching and feedback to help journalists and freelancers develop their skills.
  • Assist in communicating digital news best practices.
Your profile
  • Demonstrated experience working in a fast‑paced, daily multi‑platform news environment.
  • Strong journalistic and critical thinking skills, including knowledge of and familiarity with CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices as well as the legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
  • Ability to manage and organize large volumes of fast‑moving information
  • Substantial experience in copy editing content for digital and social platforms, including fact‑checking, legal vetting and packaging.
  • Advanced knowledge of web, mobile and social media tools and industry and audience trends.
  • Deep knowledge of Canadian Press style. Knowledge of CBCNews.ca style is an asset.
  • Superior communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • A high‑energy leader with a positive, team‑first attitude and the demonstrated ability to motivate and coach teams, and encourage creativity.
  • A strong proven connection to the communities we serve in all three territories.
  • A keen desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio‑Canada's insurance company.
  • University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of five years of journalism experience.
