Job description

The Community and Belonging Office is focused on making SAIT a more equitable and inclusive place to work and study. The Opportunity
Reporting to the Director, Community and Belonging, the Coordinator will lead the successful delivery of the Women in Skilled Trades Retention Program at SAIT. The program is designed to support the recruitment and retention of women in construction and manufacturing trades using transformative strategies focused on removing barriers, proactive interventions and culture change.
Working across the academic schools and various apprenticeship support services, the Coordinator will focus on several in scope trades including: Bricklayer, Cabinetmaker, Carpenter, Electrician, Gasfitter, Insulator, Iron worker, Plumber, Refrigeration and Air conditioning, Roofer, Sheet metal worker, Mobile crane operator, Steamfitter/pipefitter, Welder and Machinist.
The Coordinator will also utilize project management best practices to promote, deliver and evaluate the effectiveness of the retention program against expected outcomes and key performance indicators.
The Role
  • Program Implementation and Administration
  • Organize and lead project steering committee on a quarterly basis
  • Host ongoing mentorship events, lunch and learns, and employer workshops throughout the year to establish a community of practice
  • Lead development of Allyship-related curriculum and learning experiences
  • Develop process and structures to offer wrap-around support for women apprentices
  • Evaluate effectiveness of program offerings to measure impact of initiatives
  • Regularly report on progress to the SAIT Community
  • Financial Management
  • Track and regularly report on expenditures and in-kind contributions as required by the funding body
  • Strategically manage budget resources to fund priorities and achieve expected outcomes
  • Communications and Partnerships
  • Develop ongoing marketing and communication campaigns to promote supports and services
  • Host public announcement event to kick off grant funded program
  • Build relationships across campus and with external community and industry partners
  • Other administrative duties as assigned
Qualifications & Experience
  • 3-5 years of experience working to remove barriers and promote equity in the apprenticeship system and trades industry.
  • Strong understanding of Alberta's Apprenticeship Model of Education and advanced knowledge of the issues facing women in skilled trades.
  • Completion of a post-secondary program.
  • A Journeyperson Certificate in a related skilled trade is considered an asset.
  • Additional certifications such as Project Management Professional (PMP) or Canadian Certified Inclusion Professional (CCIP) are preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to build strategy and foster relationships with both internal stakeholders and external community partners.
  • Experience in designing and delivering educational content for adult learners, including workshops, online modules, toolkits, and resources.
  • Strong knowledge of equity principles, frameworks and best practices in higher education is considered an asset
  • Working knowledge of the Alberta Human Rights Act and the Employment Equity Act is an asset
Skills Required
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to influence change.
  • Strong project management skills, including budget management, with ability to set sub-goals and timelines
  • Ability to hold space for those who have been impacted by inequities and those who want to learn more about equity, diversity and inclusion
  • Some experience working in complex organizations or on complex projects, preferably in higher education, that require the ability to navigate large systems when implementing change
  • Experience handling contentious matters with sensitivity, confidentiality and balance
  • Ability to think critically, demonstrate tact and diplomacy, and work independently
