Job description

FACP faculty members prepare students for success in a wide range of post-secondary programs, workplaces, and communities. They support and empower students towards growth and change. They contribute to the culture of the Faculty through energetic teaching, scholarship and institutional service. Faculty members must be committed to inclusivity and diversity, and they play a critical role in building the capacity of the Faculty.

Duties:

Reporting to the Dean of Academic and Career Preparation and in close collaboration with the Pathways to Post Secondary Coordinator, the Pathways Access and Inclusion Coordinator (PAIC) serves as a member of the Pathways team within the Faculty of Academic and Career Preparation and the larger Vancouver Island University community. Pathways is an externally funded program that helps individuals who are missing prerequisites for direct admission to post-secondary programs to upgrade their skills and transition into university programs. There are multiple steams of Pathways, encompassing a variety of academic, health and trades focused programs, each with its own resources. The PAIC will be responsible for building sustainable and respectful relationships with community partners and First Nations to expand program delivery options beyond the current boundaries through the development of responsive and relevant program curriculum, ensuring that resources are culturally appropriate and responsive to the needs of each community. The PAIC will work closely with ACP Faculty and the receiving Faculty to ensure students are able to successfully transition into their chosen field in post-secondary education.

The PAIC will work with community members and other relevant Pathways and ACP team members to develop curriculum that encourages program expansion for underrepresented groups and increases access and inclusion within the Pathways programs. This will include maintaining regular in-person and remote availability via office hours, phone, e-mail contact, and regularly scheduled check-in meetings. The ability to travel regularly within the regions served by Vancouver Island University is essential. The PAIC will address barriers to access and successful student transition to post-secondary programs in collaboration with other Pathways and ACP team members and community partners. The PAIC will focus on program design, curriculum and scheduling that decreases barriers to Post-Secondary success and increases access and inclusion. The PAIC will contribute to Pathways team marketing and recruitment activities. The incumbent must be comfortable facilitating interactions both face-to-face and using technology (Zoom, MS Teams, etc.), using Outlook and other MS office software, and shared drives.

The incumbent will ensure individuals with learning challenges, diverse cultural and varied educational backgrounds are welcomed and supported in Pathways. The incumbent will have a strong knowledge of adult education practices and a willingness to mentor team members on program implementation collaboratively with community partners.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in relevant field, from an appropriately accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of VIU programs.
  • Experience in program coordination.
  • Proven experience building relationships with other departments and employees and knowledge and/or experience in ABE and ELL programs and courses.
  • Proven experience building respectful reciprocal relationships with community partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop responsive curriculum with well defined learning outcomes and associated resources.
  • Proven experience developing and delivering workshops, presentations, and activities.
  • Ability to plan, assess and evaluate programs.
  • Ability to provide leadership and guidance to administrative support staff and students.
  • Demonstrated high level of oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to take initiative.
  • Computer proficiency is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a post-secondary setting.
  • In-depth understanding of equity, reconciliation, diversity, and inclusion issues with particular appreciation of the issues faced by women, gender and sex minorities, Indigenous people and people of colour.
  • Experience working with newcomer populations and their supporting organizations.

VIU is pleased to offer eligible employees a comprehensive benefit plan; ample paid holiday time; professional development opportunities and a desirable pension plan. As part of the VIU campus community, our employees work with supportive colleagues within an encouraging environment and are provided with the tools and training that promote learning and development.
