Job Purpose

The Coordinator of Pastoral and Community Engagement affirms Glenview as a welcoming space for all and provides leadership that aligns with Glenview’s mission to transform lives through:

  • Connecting people within our congregation and in our broader community to meaningful service opportunities.
  • Welcoming people of all ages to grow in faith through learning activities and building relationships.
  • Providing pastoral care for all ages in coordination with the Minister.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Connecting people
    • Promote engagement and outreach activities happening in the congregation, the local neighbourhood and across Toronto, and explore ways to engage “friends of the congregation” to contribute to events and promote the good work that Glenview does in our community.
    • Provide updates for the weekly congregational email regarding local and national engagement and outreach activities.
    • Assist with fundraising efforts that provide resources for outreach programs.
    • Share opportunities with youth (and their families) who are looking to earn community service hours and volunteer experience as part of their faith formation (like the Charity Challenge Run and assisting with Out of the Cold).
    • Recommend projects where Glenview could get involved or partner with other Churches or organizations.
  • Welcoming people
    • Plan and lead one church school lesson per month, using a “One Room School House” model, which explores a story from the Bible, for children in kindergarten to Grade 7.
    • Welcoming families attending worship by orienting to the building, providing Activity Packs, and connecting them to others.
    • Create and organize family-friendly and intergenerational events for both regular and occasional church members, youth, the “Un-Churched” and the curious.
    • Encourage youth in grades 8 to 12 to gather outside of the sanctuary and participate in East Toronto Presbytery and interdenominational events.
    • Explore different resources that connect faith to daily living and show people what it means to live as a Christian in a modern context.
  • Providing pastoral care
    • Connect with members as needed by in-person visits, by phone, or by email in coordination with Minister and Pastoral Care Ministry Team.
    • Connect with homebound, retirement home, and long-term care residents as needed.
    • Willingness to pray, read appropriate scripture, and talk about faith when asked.
    • Communicate with Minister regarding crisis and end-of-life visiting.
Working Relationships
  • Minister: Confer on a regular basis.
  • Session: Monthly written report and prepare annual report and provide input to budgets on pastoral care, engagement and outreach efforts.
  • Outreach and Mission, Pastoral Care, and Christian Education Ministry Teams: Attend Team meetings and connect with to develop an engagement strategy and coordinate activities.
  • Church Administrator: Communicate requirements for administrative and communication support for activities including conferring on all requirements for space, set-up, and clean-up in or around the church building.
  • Volunteers: Lead volunteers in executing initiatives and ensure police checks are up to date.
Qualifications

Education

  • University degree or community college diploma in a relevant field of study.
  • Some theological or Biblical education would be an asset.
  • Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) in an institution or congregation would be an asset.

Experience

  • Experience in church leadership and/or congregational life of a Christian church preferably, but not necessarily, with a Presbyterian congregation.
  • Experience in community volunteering would be an asset.
  • Experience in pastoral visitation in a congregational and/or institutional setting; or professional experience in a relevant area, such as nursing or social work.
  • Previous work with children and youth or teaching would be an asset.

  • Discretion and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Creative and organized with the ability to work independently.

Other requirements

  • Ability to comply with the Presbyterian Church in Canada’s Leading with Care Policy by submitting a clear and current police record check and vulnerable sector screening prior to an offer of employment.
  • Ability to use Microsoft WORD and Excel, social media platforms and websites.
  • First aid training, allergy awareness and anaphylaxis training would be an asset.
