The Coordinator, Health & Safety at DCC supports construction sites and regional offices by guiding health and safety practices and helping teams identify risks.

Qualifications

• College diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or related field; two years of relevant experience.
• CRSP designation or equivalent professional certification is preferred.
• Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation and risk management principles.

Responsibilities

• Provide guidance on contractual health and safety requirements and review contractor submissions.

As a Coordinator, Health & Safety, you'll play a key role in supporting construction sites and regional offices by providing practical guidance and support on health and safety practices. You'll be a trusted resource, helping teams identify risks, strengthen safety programs, and maintain safe, healthy workplaces through collaboration, education, and continuous improvement.

Unlike a Prime Contractor, DCC acts as an Owner's Representative. While Prime Contractors are responsible for health and safety on their project sites, this role focuses on providing guidance, reviewing health and safety programs, and monitoring contractor performance to help ensure contractual and provincial OH&S requirements are met.

What You’ll Do

Champion a Culture of Safety

You’ll serve as a trusted health and safety resource, providing guidance, coaching, and support on legislation, policies, and best practices. Through collaboration and relationship-building, you’ll help promote a strong safety culture across project teams, regional offices, and construction sites.

Support Safe Practices Through Guidance & Coaching

You’ll work with Prime Contractors, project teams, and stakeholders to promote safe project delivery. By providing guidance on contractual health and safety requirements, reviewing contractor submissions, and monitoring project activities, you’ll help ensure contractors meet their obligations while fostering a collaborative and proactive approach to health and safety.

Investigate, Mitigate & Manage Risk

When incidents occur, you’ll support investigations, coordinate reporting requirements, support identification of contributing factors, and help teams develop practical corrective actions. You’ll play an important role in coaching teams to proactively identify and mitigate risks before they become issues.

Build Partnerships & Drive Improvement

You’ll work closely with project teams, contractors, Client-Partners, and regulatory authorities to strengthen safety practices, share lessons learned, and promote continuous improvement throughout the organization.

Lead Training & Knowledge Sharing

You’ll serve as a health and safety resource for DCC by coordinating safety meetings, supporting corporate and local health and safety initiatives, and facilitating training and knowledge-sharing activities. Through guidance, coaching, and the promotion of best practices, you’ll help strengthen health and safety awareness, support employee development, and foster a culture of safety and continuous improvement that supports DCC’s role as an Owner's Representative.

Additional Responsibilities

• Maintain relationships with provincial and federal health and safety regulators, and local DND safety partners.
• Support regional and national health and safety management activities and initiatives.
• Monitor and document site safety performance.
• Share best practices across teams and projects.
• Perform other duties as required.

Working Environment

• Regular work on active construction sites where personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.
• Combination of field and office-based work.
• Occasional travel when required.

What You’ll Bring

Education & Experience

• Minimum: College diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field, plus two (2) years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Preferred: Professional designation such as Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or other related industry certification.

Knowledge & Expertise

• Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation, regulations, industry standards, and emerging trends.
• Understanding of risk management principles and workplace hazard identification.
• Experience conducting inspections, audits, and incident investigations.
• Ability to interpret and apply health and safety requirements in a construction environment.

Skills & Abilities

• Strong communication, facilitation, and relationship-building skills.
• Ability to apply risk management techniques and recommend practical solutions.
• Proficiency with computer software and operating systems.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.

17 Wing Detachment Dundurn is a long established Canadian Armed Forces installation that supports National Defence activities, including training and logistics functions.
