Position Summary

The Finance Coordinator plays a supporting role in the financial management, tracking, analysis and reporting of financial transactions for their assigned unit. They are responsible for tasks such as ensuring that grant requirements are met and grant-related activities are fulfilled, budgeting, expense management, financial reporting, and ensuring compliance with general finance policies and procedures. The Finance Coordinator plays a key role in maintaining financial records, analyzing financial data, and supporting decision-making by providing accurate and timely financial information to stakeholders. The role will require working knowledge of generally accepted accounting standards, data analysis and grant and program administration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for overseeing the financial aspects of operating unit grants and funding agreements. This includes managing budget applications, preparing interim and final grant reports, tracking expenses within projects, extracting data from financial systems required for review and analysis, and maintaining cash forecasts and payment schedules.
  • Prepare periodic (monthly, quarterly, year-end) financial statements and reports. Compile and analyze financial variances and prepare and present findings to finance and / or operating unit leaders.
  • Prepare grant-related and quarter end journal entries and provide support for the effective management of accounts receivable and deferred revenue. Ensure all financial data and transactions are accurately recorded and properly categorized in the financial system.
  • Partner with project / program leaders to track revenues and expenses and ensure they are correctly allocated to projects, programs and donors. Ensure appropriate expense eligibility and compliance with NCC policies and procedures, address any transaction corrections and reconcile account balances (eg deferred revenue). Review employee timesheet data in the time management system (Tenrox) to ensure accuracy and make necessary adjustments or corrections.
  • Coordinate and assist in the preparation of annual forecasts and budgets for the operating unit. Review information for accuracy and completeness and upload information to the financial system.
  • Support training of new non-finance staff in the operating unit as required. Participate, contribute and collaborate with the broader NCC-wide finance team to support the standardization and continuous improvement of finance and accounting processes and procedures across NCC.

Position Requirements

  • College diploma or undergraduate degree in accounting / finance
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience, with preference for 3-5 years
  • Working towards CPA or equivalent required with preference for CPA designation
  • MS Office (advanced Excel) and knowledge of Canadian Accounting Standards for Not-for Profit organizations (ASNPO) required
  • Preference for candidates with : Experience within a charitable organization including donor reporting and grant administrationExperience with financial accounting systems such as Blackbaud Financial Edge and Raiser's Edge, SAP Concur, Tenrox or equivalent.
  • Bilingualism (French / English) would be an asset
