Job summary

Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo in Fort McMurray is seeking a Coordinator, Communications and Engagement to support the strategic communications team. Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning, implementing, and evaluating communication and engagement activities and tactics.
  • Participate in content creation and development, including photography, video, copywriting, webpage development, and social media content.
  • Assist with content maintenance and updating online digital properties across municipal platforms such as the municipal website, social media channels, and other tools.
  • Coordinate event logistics and bookings such as venues, equipment, signage, catering, schedules, safety requirements, accessibility needs.
  • Process payments, purchase orders, and invoices related to events.
  • Support the delivery and facilitation of events, activities, and ceremonies; maintain checklists, participate in setup and take down of materials and equipment, troubleshoot, welcome participants, and respond to enquiries.
  • Communicate with internal staff and subject matter experts to assist in event preparation.
  • Maintain resources and materials inventory; order, organize, and transport resources as required.
  • Respond to internal and external enquiries, tracking or redirecting as required.
  • Assist with campaign metrics and key themes reporting summaries.
  • Maintain data and records such as public feedback, documentation, and contact lists in alignment with privacy and records management practices.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes and provide practical solutions to enhance service delivery to residents and internal departments.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

The Office of the CAO provides leadership, oversight, and strategic guidance to ensure the effective delivery of municipal programs and services. The office brings together critical functions including Corporate Records, Strategic Communications, and Council & Administration Support, that enables the Municipality to operate efficiently, transparently, and in alignment with its strategic priorities.

By coordinating organizational initiatives, supporting Council and senior leadership, and ensuring clear and consistent communication both internally and with the public, the Office of the CAO plays a vital role in advancing the Municipality’s mission. The team fosters innovation, accountability, and collaboration across departments, helping to ensure that every project and decision contributes to a thriving community.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION :

Under general supervision, the Coordinator, Communications and Engagement supports the strategic communications team with the delivery of public communication and engagement strategies. The incumbent assists in the planning and coordination of municipal activities, projects, ceremonies, and events, and provides customer service to internal contacts and the public related to communication and public engagement.

QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate respectfully with internal and external contacts using judgement, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Strong organization and time management skills with the ability to manage a high volume of tasks and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Proven event planning skills and the ability to support in-person facilitation of events.
  • Proven written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Proficient in Microsoft office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively while actively contributing to team objectives.
  • Basic knowledge of occupational health and safety requirements related to public events and activities.
  • Ability to follow direction, processes, and procedures.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Diploma in Communications, Public Engagement, Event Planning, or related discipline.
  • Two (2) years of related experience in communications, public engagement, event planning, or a similar role .

OR

  • Certificate in Communications, public engagement, event planning, or a related discipline.
  • Three (3) years of related experience in communications, public engagement, event planning, or a similar role .
  • Familiarity with digital communication tools, content management systems, social media platforms, or online engagement tools is an asset.
  • IAP2 is considered an asset.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR-C certification is considered an asset.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • A valid Class Five (5) Operator’s Licence is required as incumbent will be required to operate a personal or municipal vehicle for business use on a regular basis.
  • Submission of a Driver’s Abstract.
  • Flexibility to work outside of regular business hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to travel throughout the region to various municipal facilities and public spaces.
  • Must be able to work independently in all-weather conditions.
