Job description

One of six units with the Division of Student Affairs, Vikes Athletics and Recreation (ATRS) offers eight high performance varsity sport programs (soccer, rugby, basketball, and field-hockey, cross country/track, rowing, swimming and golf), competitive intramural and sport clubs, and a broad array of health and wellness programs to the university and broader community. As a sub-brand of the University, the Vikes programs have a high profile in the greater Victoria community, through partnerships, community programming, alumni outreach and events. Athletics and Recreation’s commitment to excellence in sport, health and wellness, and customer service make it a key contributor to student success on campus, and the department plays a critical role in student recruitment and retention.

This position assumes overall responsibility for the coordination of the Climbing Centre and related programs including climbing and outdoor summer camps for youth. The main areas of responsibility include: administration, planning, implementing and evaluating courses; risk management of all aspects of the climbing centre while working from heights, marketing the climbing programs and services and outdoor climbing courses; recruiting, training, supervising and mentoring staff; maintenance of the wall; equipment maintenance and purchase recommendations; liaising with appropriate internal and external personnel who interact with the recreation facilities; and budget management.

The Coordinator works as a member of the Vikes Recreation team to execute service excellence initiatives, plan, organize and implement integrated programming and related administration, contributing to the overall marketing and engagement plan. This position offers opportunities for creativity and innovation in the development of strategies to achieve these goals.

The climbing centre is staffed seven days per week from 10am-8pm requiring this position to have flexibility to work evenings and weekends according to operational requirements.

Must have a minimum of two (2) years of recent experience in a similar position, preferably in a post-secondary or facility management or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. ACMG climbing gym instructor certification – Level 1, Standard First Aid / CPR certification.

  • Demonstrated experience in program coordination, including planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Proficiency in risk management, particularly in the context of recreational activities such as climbing.
  • Aptitude in budget management and financial planning.
  • Previous experience working with youth or leading youth programs.

In Addition, This Position Requires

  • Specific knowledge and experience in administration of climbing program.
  • Proven leadership skills and supervisory experience
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Exceptional administrative skills including meeting and calendar coordination.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to relate well and work effectively within a team environment, as well as the larger UVic community and external agencies
  • Experience in effectively maintaining the confidentiality of highly personal and sensitive information
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision and resolve tasks and/or problems by exercising judgement and innovation, and employing critical thinking and/or analysis
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet strict and often emergent deadlines
  • Ability to exercise initiative, good judgement, tact, and diplomacy
