Job summary

Baycrest Hospital invites applications for a Cook's Helper in Production. This on-call/casual role supports the Food and Nutrition Services team serving the Baycrest Centre, Apotex Jewish Home for the Aged and Mountainview Day Centre.

Responsibilities include assisting with Kashruth-compliant food prep, labeling, stock rotation, and maintaining safety standards under supervision. Prior large-quantity meal experience and a health sector background are preferred; strong teamwork and communication

Qualifications

  • High school completion or equivalent.
  • Chef training certificate from an accredited college.
  • Experience in large quantity food preparation, healthcare setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of Kashruth dietary laws and general food service equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with food preparation following Kashruth dietary laws and safety standards.
  • Work under the production supervisor in areas such as Soup, Chicken Station, TM Menu items, meat or dairy areas.
  • Label products and rotate stock in fridges/freezers; maintain inventory control.
  • Prepare and serve items attractively at correct temperatures per recipes and portions.
  • Adhere to sanitation and safety standards per Public Health guidelines.

Job Summary

The Food and Nutrition Services Department at Baycrest provides service to clients in the Baycrest Centre, the Apotex Jewish Home for the Aged and the Mountainview Day Centre. Our vision is to provide safe, appetizing food of optimum nutritional quality to facilitate an enjoyable mealtime experience for patients, residents, staff and visitors in compliance with the Jewish laws of Kashruth.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assists with food preparation by following the Kashruth dietary laws and adheres to food handling methods according to established standards of sanitations and safety.
  • Works under direction of production supervisor. May be reassigned to any of the following areas: Soup, Chicken Station, TM Menu items (mince & puree), meat area or dairy area.
  • Ensures all products are labeled and stock rotated in fridges and freezers, maintaining inventory control.
  • Prepares and serves assigned items attractively, accurately, at the appropriate temperature specified and in accordance with standardized recipes and portion sizes, as per daily production schedule.
  • Adheres to food handling methods according to established standards of sanitation, infection control and safety in accordance with Ministry of Health Long Term Care Standards, The Occupational Health and Safety Act and departmental policies
Qualifications
  • High school completion or equivalent
  • Chef training certificate from an accredited college required
  • Previous experience in large quantity food preparation and presentation, preferably in healthcare or a long term care setting required
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the use of large scale equipment
  • Excellent understanding of general food service equipment, sanitation methods as well as cook-chill/re-therm systems
  • Current Food Handlers certification as required by Public Health
  • Previous experience working with the elderly is an asset
  • Effective customer service, oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to effectively work independently and as part of a team
