Job summary

Baycrest Hospital is seeking a Cook's Helper to support the Food and Nutrition Services team. You will assist with food preparation in alignment with Kashruth dietary laws and safety standards, and work under the supervision of the production team.

The role requires experience in large quantity food preparation, knowledge of large-scale equipment, and a Food Handler certificate. Strong customer service and the ability to work both independently and with a team are essential.

Qualifications

  • High school completion required.
  • Chef training certificate from an accredited college is required.
  • Experience in large quantity food preparation and presentation preferred in healthcare or long-term care.
  • Knowledge of large-scale equipment and food service operations.
  • Food Handler certification as required by Public Health.
  • Experience with elderly care is an asset.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with food preparation following Kashruth dietary laws and safety standards.
  • Work under direction of production supervisor; may be reassigned to Soup, Chicken Station, TM Menu items, meat area or dairy area.
  • Ensure products are labeled and stock rotated; maintain inventory control.
  • Prepare and serve items attractively at correct temperatures per recipes and schedules.
  • Follow sanitation, infection control, and safety standards per regulations.

Job Summary

The Food and Nutrition Services Department at Baycrest provides service to clients in the Baycrest Centre, the Apotex Jewish Home for the Aged and the Mountainview Day Centre. Our vision is to provide safe, appetizing food of optimum nutritional quality to facilitate an enjoyable mealtime experience for patients, residents, staff and visitors in compliance with the Jewish laws of Kashruth.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assists with food preparation by following the Kashruth dietary laws and adheres to food handling methods according to established standards of sanitations and safety.
  • Works under direction of production supervisor. May be reassigned to any of the following areas: Soup, Chicken Station, TM Menu items (mince & puree), meat area or dairy area.
  • Ensures all products are labeled and stock rotated in fridges and freezers, maintaining inventory control.
  • Prepares and serves assigned items attractively, accurately, at the appropriate temperature specified and in accordance with standardized recipes and portion sizes, as per daily production schedule.
  • Adheres to food handling methods according to established standards of sanitation, infection control and safety in accordance with Ministry of Health Long Term Care Standards, The Occupational Health and Safety Act and departmental policies
Qualifications
  • High school completion or equivalent
  • Chef training certificate from an accredited college required
  • Previous experience in large quantity food preparation and presentation, preferably in healthcare or a long term care setting required
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the use of large scale equipment
  • Excellent understanding of general food service equipment, sanitation methods as well as cook-chill/re-therm systems
  • Current Food Handlers certification as required by Public Health
  • Previous experience working with the elderly is an asset
  • Effective customer service, oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to effectively work independently and as part of a team
