POSITION SUMMARY:
The Cook Assistant is responsible for performing a variety of preparation duties in a traditional institutional kitchen in accordance with production schedules, standardized recipes and standards in accordance with accepted safety and food handling policies and procedures with an overall focus towards implementing quality and quantity food standards and controls as established for the Department.
Within the scope of this position, the Cook Assistant takes on a key role to continually provide an environment promoting a culture of resident safety and freedom from harm and injury.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Food preparation and delivery
• Assists Cook in preparing food items in a timely fashion following production time schedules, prescribed recipes, portions, procedures and guidelines.
• Assists in meal service as required relating to beverage and meal service, plating of food, clearing and cleaning of dining rooms etc.
• Assists in regular and modified foods as directed to meet resident diet modifications and recipe compliance.
• May be required to assist with preparation of meal carts.
• Assists with preparation of food and supply orders.
• Assists with receiving and proper storage.
• May be required to assist with menu development.
• Participates in food and equipment product evaluation.
• Assist in audits as directed and required.
• Daily cleaning and sweeping floors. - Food and Equipment Safety
• Maintains and sanitizes work area and all related equipment. Follow cleaning schedule.
• Follows proper food handling procedures including maintaining food in a temperature safety zone.
• Appropriately directs to Cook any matters that may require corrective action.
• May be required to assist in monitoring food usage and waste.
• Labels, dates and stores food items appropriately.
• May be required to assist with accurate food production and waste records.
• Practices safe and proper use of food service equipment.
• May be assigned tasks to open and/or close the kitchen utilizing the required checklist.
• Maintains established AgeCare policies, procedures and objectives for quality assurance and safety. - Additional duties and responsibilities
• Displays polite, spirit-of-service attitude towards residents and co-workers.
• Maintains friendly, efficient and responsive attitude toward residents and families while performing job duties.
• Interacts with co-workers in a positive, team atmosphere in order to help find a better way to perform the job.
• Attends all department/hospital in-service orientation and other meetings and training as required. - Resident Safety
• Performs all work in accordance with facility, AgeCare and regulatory safety procedures and requirements including OSM, WHMIS, and OH&S.
• Performs all duties in a manner in which resident safety is the focus.
• Reports any unsafe activities that may cause harm or injury to a resident.
• Educates other co-workers / colleagues on the proper safety techniques when there is a possibility of endangering a resident.
• Observes and corrects any unsafe behavior demonstrated by residents.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education / Designation Requirements:
• Must successfully complete the required training program within the defined probationary period.
• High School Graduate or equivalent is preferred.
• Certification in a nationally recognized food service safety program.
• Must be fluent in English, both orally and in writing. - Experience:
• 2 years of experience as a Cook in a Healthcare environment.
• Experience working with Juice dispenser, Dish Machine, Steam tables, Chemical Dispenser, Knives, Ovens, Mixer. - Special Job Characteristics:
• Ability to work under minimal supervision and accomplish tasks in a fast paced environment following departmental guidelines.
• Demonstrated organizational and efficiency skills.
• Demonstrated effective multi-tasking.
• Must have the ability to communicate effectively with patients, customers and co-workers.
• Must have the manual dexterity required for handling equipment and supplies.
• Must be flexible and adapt easily to changes in schedule, work assignments and environment.

Wage Levelling Salary: $23.38 per hour
