Job Description

Position Purpose Summary:

The incumbent prepares and serves nutritious meals as outlined on menus in accordance with applicable food service and safety regulations.

Accountabilities

The incumbent may perform all, some, or similar range of duties.

Food Preparation
  • Prepares and serves nutritious meals to guests following Canada’s Food Guide and the Dietician-approved menu.
  • Ensures Food-Safe practices are always followed in food preparation and service.
  • Uses a variety of cookery methods including boil, blanch, simmer, poach, steam, stew, braise, roast, bake, grill, and shallow fry.
  • Collaborates with Head Cook or Manager to ensure inventory is rotated every three days.
  • Checks and records food temperatures, considering the time in the danger zone.
  • Properly labels, dates, covers, and stores items in refrigerators and freezers.
  • Records food temperatures before service.
  • Uses food efficiently to minimize wastage.
  • Prepares and sequences food timing and tasks.
  • Records menu deviations on substitution charts.
  • May assist with recording meal statistics and volunteer hours, ensuring accurate timesheets.
  • Participates in scheduled training as required.
Health And Safety
  • Maintains cleanliness of all food prep devices with appropriate cleaning products.
  • Completes daily temperature audits for refrigeration units.
  • Reports issues and collaborates with Community Ministries Supervisor.
  • Follows safety precautions and hygiene standards, including Universal Precautions.
  • Keeps kitchen, storage, and food areas clean and organized.
  • Wears appropriate uniforms and hair restraints when on duty.
  • Ensures building security and safety standards are met or exceeded.
  • Uses proper lifting, twisting, and reaching techniques.
  • Demonstrates high personal hygiene standards.
  • Participates in monthly inspections.
Communication
  • Communicates effectively with staff and volunteers regarding food safety and service.
  • Maintains knowledge of products, services, and market trends.
  • Treats guests and staff with respect and dignity.
  • May supervise and advise colleagues, especially in the absence of the Head Cook or Manager.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Relationship Management

Internal: Executive Director, Community Ministries staff, kitchen team.

External: Community groups, volunteers, public relations within the community.

Managerial/Technical Responsibilities

Reports directly to the _____.

Direct reports: None.

Financial and Material Management
  • May demonstrate procedures to others.
  • Responsible for proper storage and use of food and equipment.
  • Involved in minor financial activities, such as small cash transactions.
  • Has limited input into the annual budget.

Working Conditions

Work environment is primarily in kitchens, dining, and storage areas.

Disagreeable Conditions
  • Dirt, dust, temperature variations, cramped spaces, stress, dealing with difficult individuals, noise, hot/steamy conditions, tight timelines, cuts, burns.

Potential hazards include minor injuries, infectious diseases, fire, chemical exposure, physical hazards, and slips.

Precautions include Universal Precautions, proper food handling, PPE, immunizations, crisis training, and safety protocols.

The job involves computer work, lifting, walking, standing, and handling supplies.

Qualifications
  • Support for the mission of The Salvation Army.
  • Compliance with OH&S regulations and policies.
  • Post-secondary education of at least one year, with Red Seal Certification, Food Safe Levels 1 & 2, First Aid Level 1, and other relevant training.
  • Experience in industrial kitchens, knowledge of food prep and equipment.
  • Fluent in English, with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and background checks.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds, stand for long periods, and handle physical demands.
Compensation

Range: $18.99 - $23.73, up to $28.48, based on experience and qualifications.
