Overview

As a member of the military, Cooks prepare nutritious food items and meals for Canadian Armed Forces members and National Defence employees.

Their responsibilities are to :

  • Prepare and serve meals that range from cafeteria-style menus to formal multi-course meals for military and civilian dignitaries
  • Assist in the handling and control of food and non-food supplies
  • Practice workplace health and safety procedures
  • Provide for Religious and Spiritual dietary accommodations
  • Manage food safety and Defence
  • Operate, clean and maintain food services equipment and facilities

Work environment

A Cook may work in a variety of environments within Canada or overseas on deployments. Most are employed at bases and wings, while some serve with land-based operational units or onboard ships and submarines.

If you choose a career in the Regular Force, after completing all required training, you'll be assigned to your first base. While there is some flexibility regarding postings (relocations), accommodations can't always be guaranteed, so expect to move during your career. If you join the Primary Reserve Force, you'll do so through a specific Reserve unit, working part-time, typically one night per week and some weekends, with the possibility of full-time employment.

The minimum education required is the completion of Grade 10 or Secondary 4 in Quebec, including Grade 10 Workplace math or equivalent. An existing college diploma or certificate in food services or culinary arts is preferred, and the Forces may place you directly into on-the-job training following basic training. Foreign education may also be accepted.

The Non-Commissioned Member Subsidized Training and Education Plan (NCMSTEP) allows successful recruits to attend a diploma program at an approved Canadian college, with full salary, medical, dental care, and vacation pay, in exchange for a service commitment.

Training

Initial training includes Basic Military Qualification at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, focusing on physical fitness and core military skills. Cooks then attend specialized training at the Canadian Forces Logistics Training Center (CFLTC) in Borden, Ontario, covering cooking techniques, food safety, equipment maintenance, and food service standards.

Opportunities for specialized training include instructional techniques, Red Seal certification, submarine service, Flight Steward, Food & Beverage Manager certification, and National Food Safety Training Program.

Part-time options

This position is available part-time across Canada in the Army, Navy, and Air Force, especially within Reserve units, with pay, benefits, and opportunities for deployment and full-time work.

Reserve members are trained to the same standards as the Regular Force, starting with basic military training, followed by occupational training at CFLTC and on-the-job experience. They serve part-time, usually evenings and weekends, with pay at 92.8% of Regular Force rates, benefits, and pension eligibility.
