Job summary

Johnson Controls is seeking a Building Controls Engineer to design, configure, and deliver building control systems including fire and HVAC, aligning with project requirements. You’ll bridge engineering design, programming, and field installation, coordinating with project teams and ensuring functional systems.

You will gain opportunities to provide technical input, value engineering, and system optimization, while guiding junior staff and supporting continuous improvement of engineering

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or diploma in Engineering Technology, Building Systems, or related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in building automation systems, HVAC controls, fire systems, or related low-voltage systems.
  • Knowledge of control theory and system integration protocols such as BACnet or LON.
  • Experience with system design tools, drafting software, and technical documentation.
  • Strong understanding of electrical, mechanical, and control systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, commission, and validate complex systems.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical information clearly.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and relevant engineering/design software.
  • Proficiency in English and French is a strong asset.
  • Must have 10 years of Canadian Residency to obtain Secret Clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Design and configure building control systems, including flow diagrams, sequences of operations, bill of materials, network layouts, and electrical schematics.
  • Develop, test, and implement software programs required to operate control systems in accordance with project requirements.
  • Select hardware designs using established standards and libraries and ensure proper system integration.
  • Coordinate preparation of drawings, equipment schedules, and submittal documentation.
  • Select, order, and track materials to ensure timely delivery aligned with project schedules.
  • Support system commissioning, including loading controllers, validating functionality, and troubleshooting issues.
  • Gather and incorporate field changes into as-built drawings and documentation.
  • Assist with site-specific training for customers and end users on system operation.
  • Participate in project meetings and provide updates on progress and technical issues.
  • Perform value engineering to optimize cost-effective solutions.
  • Ensure designs meet quality, safety, and compliance standards.
  • Adhere to Johnson Controls safety policies.

Under the general direction of the Installation/Operations Manager and/or Engineering Leader, you will be responsible for the design, configuration, and delivery of building control systems, including fire, HVAC, and other low-voltage systems, in alignment with project requirements.

You will support the successful execution of projects by bridging the gap between engineering design, system programming, and field installation. This includes developing hardware and software designs, coordinating with project teams, and ensuring system functionality meets customer and contract expectations.

You will work closely with Sales, Operations, Project Management, and field teams to support project development, provide technical input (including value engineering and system optimization), and ensure designs are delivered accurately, efficiently, and on schedule.

You may also provide guidance to junior designers or technical support staff and contribute to continuous improvement of engineering standards and processes.
