Job summary

Professional Staffing's client, a global leader in custom automation, seeks an Electrical Controls Software Designer to design, debug, and deploy sophisticated automation software across multiple projects. You will work with robotics, vision systems, motion control and custom machine design from concept through installation.

Applicants should have 5+ years in a custom automation environment, a strong engineering degree, and hands-on robotics/control systems experience.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in a custom automation environment (OEM).
  • Post-secondary engineering degree, diploma or equivalent in electrical, systems or computer engineering.
  • Strong programming, mechanical and electrical problem-solving skills.
  • Understanding of robotics, control systems and machine operation with hands-on experience.
  • Self-starter; able to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision; travel ~30%.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop PLC and/or PC-based software per customer/project requirements using standard programming methods.
  • Debug and commission control systems at the facility and at customer sites during installation.
  • Travel to vendor/supplier sites for installation, commissioning and training.
  • Select, test, and integrate hardware/software components (robots, sensors, motion controllers, vision systems, lasers).
  • Collaborate with Controls Engineering and other teams to improve integration methods, safety and functionality.
  • Provide thorough testing of machine functionality and documentation for each project.
  • Advise customers on solving technical problems and provide project-specific training.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Design and develop software programs (PLC and/or PC based) specific to customer and project requirements based on standard programming methods
  • Debug and commission control systems at our facility during the system integration stage and then at the customer site during installation
  • Travel as required to customer and supplier sites to perform installation, commissioning, and training duties
  • Select, test, and integrate hardware and software components such as robots, analog devices, motion controllers, sensors, vision systems, and lasers
  • Work with other members of the Controls Engineering department and other groups to continuously improve methods of integrating controls technology, with the goals being enhanced safety, enhanced functionality, and reduced cost
  • Work with customers, project managers, designers, toolmakers and electricians to solve problems in order to provide the customer with a complete, functional automation system
  • Provide thorough testing of machine functionality to verify software program completeness
  • Provide accurate documentation for each project
  • Advise customer on solving technical problems
  • Provide customer with training specific to their current project (i.e. machine operation, programming principles and program structure)
  • Ability to work within a team environment and actively participate in group meetings
What We're Looking For
  • 5+ years of experience within a custom automation environment (OEM)
  • A post-secondary engineering degree, diploma or equivalent, specializing in electrical, systems or computer engineering
  • Strong programming, mechanical and electrical problem-solving skills
  • Understanding of robotics, control systems and machine operation with hands-on experience
  • A self-starter with the ability to work as part of a team in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision
  • Expectation of travel to vendor/supplier locations is 30% of the time, however may be exceeded in exceptional circumstances to meet project needs
