Edson Packaging, a division of ProMach based in Hamilton, ON, is currently seeking a Controls Designer to join our team. In this role, you will play a key part in the success of our projects by designing, programming, and testing control systems for various Edson projects. This position reports directly to the Electrical Controls Supervisor.

Are you excited about this work?

  • Develop, test, and troubleshoot PLC and HMI programs to ensure optimal performance.
  • Provide technical support for customer acceptance testing, on-site installations, and aftermarket troubleshooting (both remote and on-site).
  • Collaborate with service technicians to verify that assembly, wiring, installation, and operation of control panels and electrical systems meet quality standards, applicable codes, and customer requirements.
  • Interpret technical specifications and application parameters to ensure proper system functionality.
  • Document validations and design specifications as required for compliance and project tracking.
  • Work closely with electrical controls design, mechanical design, and manufacturing teams to identify and resolve issues while developing effective software solutions.
  • Perform on-site commissioning of new in-house machines and support aftermarket customer site requests, with U.S. travel requirements up to 25%.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support the position and organizational needs.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechatronics Engineering, or a three-year College Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in electrical controls programming within the custom automation sector (packaging industry preferred).
  • Proficiency in Allen Bradley, AB GuardLogix, RSLogix 5000, Studio 5000, Servo Motion Control, and FactoryTalk ME and SE required.
  • Knowledge of additional PLC platforms (Siemens, Schneider, B&R, Beckhoff, Omron) and robotics (Fanuc or ABB) is an asset.
  • Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and analytical skills with the ability to work independently.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 and ERP systems (Syteline experience preferred).
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills with the ability to handle high-pressure situations calmly.
  • Understanding of pneumatic systems and AutoCAD Electrical is preferred.
  • Must be able to travel to the U.S. and internationally.
