Position Summary

Reporting to the Director, Finance, the Controller will play a significant role in advancing Dixon Hall’s mission by maintaining high standards and supporting the continuous improvement of Dixon Hall’s Finance department. The Controller is responsible for all finance operations, including funder reporting, AP, AR, GL oversite, and financial statement review.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the achievement of the organization’s strategic directions.
  • Complete funder reports, accurately and on time.
  • Manage and monitor all financial transactions ensuring compliance with the organization’s policies and with regulatory requirements.
  • Review bi-weekly payment batches; oversee the ongoing operations of the AP function.
  • Maintain effective controls within the finance function and make suggestions for continuous improvement of the control environment.
  • Respond to queries on financial matters from both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Prepare finance-related reporting for both the Board and management.
  • Complete and analyze the monthly financial statements.
  • Coordinate the completion of the annual budget.
  • Oversee special projects relating to Finance and Treasury Management.
  • Review and analyze monthly management financial statements in order to identify operational trends.
  • Provide Leadership and support to finance staff.
  • Other duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting, or a closely related field of study.
  • An accounting designation (CPA).
  • 6+ years working experience in the accounting field with experience at the Controller level.
  • Experience in managing accounting personnel.
  • Current knowledge of accounting standards and operational best practices.
  • Experience completing and reviewing funder reporting.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a full-cycle budget process.
  • Ability to glean operational trends from financial statements and communicate the results of a financial statement review to stakeholders throughout the organization.
  • Experience drafting and reviewing financial statements.
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee financial reporting, AR and AP functions.
  • Excellent computer skills, including a working knowledge of MS Office applications and familiarity with off-the-shelf accounting software packages.
  • Experience with Adagio accounting software preferred, but not required.
  • Superior organizational, numeracy, analytical, and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Able to manage multiple projects and deadlines, prioritize, and take initiative.
  • Self‑directed and independent, as well as proven experience in working effectively as an inter‑disciplinary team member and in collaboration with other community professionals.
  • Experience in not‑for‑profit accounting and grants management preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal English language communication skills with a clear ability to exchange knowledge; fluency in additional languages, relevant to the communities of service, will be considered an asset.
  • Must be qualified to work in Canada legally for the employer.
  • Able to provide a Vulnerable Sector Screening check with a ‘Clear’ or satisfactory result that meets the operational requirements of the Agency.

  • Modern office workspace illuminated by either fluorescent, LED, incandescent, or natural light sources.
  • Able to access older buildings and workspaces that have not been converted to meet current accessibility standards.
  • Quiet to moderate noise levels that are consistent with a modern office space shared by multiple employees.
  • Overtime as required.

  • Long periods spent at a desk/computer.
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
  • Able to tolerate a variety of indoor environments as determined by program locations.
  • Mobility will be a key component of this position in order to address the needs of our Agency locations and programs.
