The Controller is a key contributor to Sierra Construction Group’s Finance team, responsible for managing complex accounting functions across multiple legal entities and divisions. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Finance, this role supports accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, budgeting, and the development of internal controls. Working closely with both the finance and operational teams, the Controller provides critical insight and support to drive financial health and business performance. The ideal candidate will be highly analytical, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, construction-focused environment with evolving business needs.
Key Responsibilities:
Core Accounting responsibilities
- Oversee Accounting and Finance Operations, include AR, AP and Payroll Transactions
- Lead the month-end and year-end closing processes, including journal entries, accruals, balance sheet reconciliations, and financial statement preparation including supporting the preparation of consolidated financial statements for internal and external reporting.
- Prepare and review internal financial reports for accuracy, consistency, and completeness across multiple divisions.
- Maintain the general ledger and ensure integrity of financial data in alignment with ASPE.
- Manage and reconcile intercompany transactions and balances.
- Maintain schedules for fixed assets, prepaids, accruals, and other key financial components.
- Lead weekly and monthly cash flow forecast
Regulatory Compliance & Audit
- Ensure timely and accurate submission of regulatory filings including HST, WSIB, EHT, Income Tax and other remittances.
- Coordinate with external auditors and assist in preparing audit schedules and year-end working papers.
- Develop company wide accounting policies and procedures
- Assist in the development and documentation of internal controls, ensuring compliance with financial policies.
- Maintain Corporate filing, updating registration, and maintaining updates with government regulation requirements
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Support the VP of Finance in annual budgeting and periodic reforecasting processes.
- Perform variance analysis, identify drivers, and recommend corrective actions where needed.
- Collaborate with department leads to gather inputs and provide financial guidance.
System & Process Improvement
- Act as a subject matter expert on Vista by Viewpoint ERP system to enhance data quality and streamline reporting.
- Proactively identify opportunities for process automation and efficiency improvements within the Finance department.
- Participate in system implementations, upgrades, and data migrations as needed.
Project & Construction Accounting
- Partner with operations teams to review job cost reporting and ensure accurate Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules.
- Participate on Labour costing and equipment costing, and implement effective job costing processes
- Analyze margin variances and cost allocations for construction projects.
- Provide financial insight to support project forecasting and performance tracking.
Collaboration & Business Support
- Act as a finance business partner to operations teams
- Provide mentorship and support to junior accounting staff as required
- Participate in cross-functional initiatives to improve financial visibility and operational decision-making
- Adhere to all company policies and procedures
- Perform any other duties that may be assigned, whether specifically or generally related to the role
Required Knowledge and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree and CPA or CMA designation is required; CA Firm Experience is an asset
- Minimum 7+ years of progressive accounting experience; construction industry experience strongly preferred.
- Solid understanding of ASPE, project-based accounting, and multi-entity financial structures.
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, including financial modeling and complex reconciliations.
- Proficiency with Vista by Viewpoint or similar construction ERP systems
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen attention to detail.
- Proven ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with non-finance stakeholders.
- Experience working with external auditors and preparing year-end documentation.
