Job description

New Controller opportunity working with a retailer with strong financial backing and plans to double in size over the next five years.

Based in Victoria, BC, this role offers a unique opportunity to lead and shape the financial function in a well-capitalized, entrepreneurial environment.

As the most senior finance professional, the Controller will oversee financial operations, manage a team of five, drive process improvements, and contribute to strategic growth in collaboration with corporate leadership and store operations.

Who - the Company:

The company operates multiple home improvement stores across Western Canada.

What - the Role:

As the most senior finance professional, the Controller will oversee all financial and accounting operations, manage a team of five, and partner with key stakeholders to deliver accurate, timely financial reporting. The Controller will play a pivotal role in supporting the company's growth through strategic financial insights and process improvement.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Lead and manage a team of five finance professionals, providing mentorship, feedback, and development.
2. Oversee day-to-day accounting functions, including AP, AR, payroll, and general ledger management.
3. Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in line with ASPE.
4. Manage cash flow, treasury functions, and ensure financial obligations are met.
5. Conduct variance analysis and provide insights to inform decision-making.
6. Oversee tax compliance and external audit processes.
7. Collaborate with store management to optimize financial performance.
8. Develop and maintain budgeting and long-term financial planning processes.
9. Drive process and systems improvements, including ERP implementation.
10. Establish and maintain robust internal controls.

Who - the Candidate:

1. CPA designation strongly preferred.
2. Proven leadership experience, with a track record of managing and developing finance teams.
3. Strong financial acumen, with experience in retail or related sectors (e.g., manufacturing, distribution, warehousing).
4. Robust experience and knowledge of Canadian accounting standards (ASPE).
5. Hands-on experience with financial modeling and advanced Excel skills.
6. Familiarity with ERP systems (experience with implementation is a plus).
7. Process improvement mindset with a pragmatic approach to change management.
8. Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.

Where:

The headquarters is in Victoria, BC, and working arrangements include a minimum of 2 days per week in office, although ideally you will be mostly in office while learning the business and embedding in the role.

How Much:

Base salary of between $120,000 and $150,000; Bonus Component; Deferred Pension Program; Standard Benefits Package; Four Weeks' Vacation.
