Job description

Harbinger has Partnered with a growing Residential Highrise and Commercial Builder and are looking for a highly organized and motivated Controller to lead the accounting team within a high-growth residential home building environment. This role is responsible for overseeing all aspects of financial management, including project accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and month-end close. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills, a solid background in the homebuilding industry, and extensive experience with the Newstar Enterprise system. This role is a full time in office role with flexible hours. Located in North York, Lesmill area.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead, mentor, and manage a high-performing accounting team, ensuring accuracy and timeliness across all financial functions.
• Oversee full-cycle accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and job costing.
• Manage project-level accounting and ensure accurate tracking of costs, budgets, and margins across multiple developments.
• Coordinate the month-end and year-end close process, ensuring compliance with GAAP and internal reporting deadlines.
• Develop and maintain budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning models in collaboration with operational leaders.
• Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting and provide insights to support strategic decision-making.
• Implement and maintain internal controls and financial procedures to safeguard company assets.
• Act as the primary point of contact for external auditors and manage annual audit preparation.
• Optimize use of Newstar Enterprise, training staff and developing best practices to ensure consistent and effective use.
• Support ERP improvements and financial systems integrations as needed.
• Monitor financial performance, identify trends, and recommend corrective actions when necessary.

Qualifications

• CPA designation required
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; Master’s degree preferred
• Minimum 7-10 years of progressive accounting experience, including 3+ years in a leadership or Controller role
• Experience in the home building or construction industry is strongly preferred
• Proficiency with Newstar Enterprise is required
• Proven ability to lead and develop large accounting teams
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
