Horizon Recruitment is recruiting for a Controller to lead the finance and accounting functions for a multi-entity business. This role will work closely with the owner to guide financial strategy, strengthen business performance, manage risk, and support long-term growth.

The successful candidate will bring strong financial leadership and a hands-on approach to budgeting, forecasting, reporting, cash flow management, and business operations. Beyond finance, this role will oversee key administrative functions, including payroll, human resources, and IT, helping ensure the business operates efficiently and remains compliant with applicable regulations.

Responsibilities
  • Partner with the owner to develop financial strategies, assess business performance, identify risks, and recommend practical solutions to improve profitability and support growth.
  • Lead budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, and long-term financial modelling to support business decisions and strategic initiatives.
  • Prepare and present accurate financial reports, including monthly profit and loss results, budget comparisons, cash flow forecasts, and consolidated financial statements.
  • Oversee cash flow, working capital, accounts payable, accounts receivable, collections, and weekly payment approvals to maintain financial stability.
  • Manage banking relationships, credit facilities, lender reporting, financing proposals, and financial models for equipment leasing, inventory financing, and other funding needs.
  • Direct accounting operations across related entities, including intercompany transactions, month-end and year-end close, reconciliations, and cost allocations.
  • Maintain effective internal controls and ensure compliance with accounting standards, tax requirements, and applicable federal, provincial, and municipal regulations.

  • Identify opportunities to improve financial systems, reporting tools, accounting processes, and operational efficiency.
  • Work with warehouse, logistics, and sales teams to improve purchasing and inventory planning, labour tracking, invoicing, and the management of slow-moving inventory.
  • Lead, coach, and develop the finance and accounting team, setting clear expectations and supporting strong performance.
  • Support corporate structuring, tax planning, foreign exchange risk management, and the financial evaluation of new business opportunities and capital investments.
  • Oversee payroll administration, employee records, benefits, RRSP matching, onboarding and offboarding, and compliance with applicable employment legislation.
  • Oversee IT policies, operations, risk management, investment controls, and coordination of technology priorities across departments.
Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and financial analysis.
  • Experience overseeing month-end and year-end close, general ledger maintenance, balance sheet reconciliations, and consolidated financial statements.
  • Solid understanding of internal controls, accounting standards, tax compliance, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Experience managing banking relationships, credit facilities, lender reporting, financing proposals, and cash management.
  • Proven ability to partner with business owners and senior leaders, translate financial results into practical recommendations, and support strategic decisions.
  • Experience leading, mentoring, and developing a finance or accounting team.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities across finance, operations, administration, and other business functions.
  • Experience working with external auditors, accountants, tax advisors, lenders, and other professional partners.
  • Familiarity with payroll administration, employee benefits, HR processes, and employment compliance.
  • Experience with operational systems, IT oversight, process improvement, and financial reporting tools.
  • Professional accounting designation (CPA) is an asset.
