Qualifications

• 3-6 years of relevant accounting and finance experience.
• CPA designation preferred or progress through final stages of CPA program.
• Strong knowledge of financial statement prep, GL accounting, budgeting, internal controls, audit prep, tax compliance.
• Exceptional attention to detail with ability to investigate discrepancies and recommend solutions.
• Interpersonal and leadership skills to guide an accounting team and communicate financial information.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and consolidate monthly financial statements and maintain GL integrity.
• Perform account analysis, reconciliations, journal entries, expense reviews and accrual adjustments.
• Investigate significant budget variances and address issues in financials (inventory, costing, margins).
• Prepare annual branch budgets and monitor product group performance and AR aging.
• Oversee inventory shrinkage reporting, rebates calculations, and lender reporting.
• Coordinate annual operating-company audits and assist with year-end audits for related entities.
• Review external corporate tax returns to ensure accuracy and audit readiness across the organization.

Prime Management Group Inc. is pleased to conduct a confidential search on behalf of our client for a strategic, commercially minded, and growth-oriented Controller. Reporting to the Vice President, Finance, the successful candidate will oversee core accounting activities and financial reporting across a multi-location retail operation comprising several branches and all related companies. This opportunity combines hands-on responsibility and exposure to executive decision-making, with potential for future progression through succession planning.

This detail-focused professional will produce accurate, timely monthly financial statements and maintain general ledger integrity through account analysis, reconciliations, journal entries, expense reviews, and accrual adjustments. Beyond reporting results, the Controller will investigate significant budget variances and resolve issues revealed through the financials, including inventory discrepancies, costing errors, and margin fluctuations. Working closely with the executive team, this analytical business partner and leader will bring a curious, improvement-minded approach to identifying inefficiencies, streamlining workflows and pursuing appropriate automation, including AI tools.

The Controller will prepare and consolidate annual branch budgets, identify savings opportunities and support profitability and disciplined expense management. Responsibilities include monthly reporting on product group performance and accounts receivable aging, quarterly and annual inventory shrinkage reporting, customer rebate calculations and lender reporting. As a principled steward of company assets, the Controller will monitor for potential fraud and losses, assess safeguards and strengthen controls. The role also includes coordinating preparation for the annual operating-company audit, assisting with related-entity year-end audits, preparing HST returns and reviewing externally prepared corporate tax returns to support accurate records, tax compliance and audit readiness across the organization.

Qualifications and Experience

• 3-6 years of relevant accounting and finance experience, demonstrating readiness to assume a broad Controller role.
• A CPA designation (preferred) or progress through the final stages of the CPA program.
• Strong technical knowledge of financial statement preparation, general ledger accounting, budgeting, internal controls, audit preparation, and tax compliance.
• Exceptional attention to detail, with the analytical ability to investigate discrepancies, identify underlying causes, and recommend practical solutions.
• Interpersonal and leadership skills to guide an accounting team and communicate financial information clearly to colleagues across functions.
• An aptitude for process improvement and technology. Experience with Great Plains or a similar accounting package is preferred.
• Integrity, initiative, and a commitment to continued learning, with the motivation to grow into greater responsibility as future opportunities arise.
