Job description

ServiceMASTER of Edmonton is seeking a hands-on, experienced Controller.

Working with and reporting to the CFO, the Controller is responsible for the management of financial operations, mentorship, direction of the finance team, and the provision of timely and accurate information to the CFO.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the full cycle of accounting operations including the review of journal entries, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and statutory reporting.
  • Working with the CFO to set priorities within the accounting group.
  • Assist the CFO and Operations to establish and monitor internal controls and processes to ensure accounting activities are in accordance with established legal regulatory, company policies, procedures and strategic goals to establish best practices.
  • Provide advice and guidance on all accounting matters including financial systems, record keeping, analysis, and reporting, identifying areas of improvement with a view to continuous learning and improvement
  • Prepare and analyze accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual operating results with the provision of supporting documentation and reports in a timely manner as required for internal and external groups.
  • Provide strategic analysis as required to assist in improved decision making.
  • Liaise and build strong relationships with external auditors, stakeholders, and owners.
  • Coordinate, contribute to and supervise the preparation of the year-end audit package.
  • Coordinate and oversee all other customer and government audits.
  • Hire, train, mentor, and supervise accounting staff.
  • Other related duties and required or assigned.
Qualifications
  • CPA designation is required.
  • 2-3 years’ experience in a public accounting firm preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a Controller role.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience in the application of accounting principles, practices, and financial management.
  • Construction industry experience or project-based accounting is an asset.
  • A thorough knowledge of all relevant Federal, Provincial, and local requirements regarding financial records is essential.
  • High level of critical and logical thinking, analysis, and/or reasoning to identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts.
  • Proficient project management skills and the ability to motivate teams to produce quality work within tight timeframes.
  • Financial analysis and some strategic planning experience is required.
  • Excellent leadership, presentation, problem solving, decision-making, and organizational skills are essential.
  • Experience overseeing audits performed by external audit firms.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to work well under pressure and meet set deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and prioritizing skills.
  • Attention to detail in all areas of work.
  • Management and supervisory experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office and sound knowledge of ERP computer systems with the ability to adapt to and learn new software.
  • Ability to interpret and implement company policies and procedures.
