Job summary

The Municipality of Grey Highlands invites applications for the Transportation Operator. This contract, full-time role runs September 2026 through April 2028 and offers 40 hours per week with a wage range of $30.58 to $35.77 per hour.

Reporting to the TPS Team Leader, the role involves operating heavy equipment, winter maintenance, and safe operation of municipal roads. A DZ license is required; AZ is an asset. OSSD and two years of experience are preferred.

Qualifications

• Completion of OSSD (Grade 12) or equivalent.
• Minimum of two years experience operating heavy equipment, preferably municipal.
• Experience operating a grader is required.
• Valid DZ Driver's License required; AZ license would be an asset.
• Willingness to attend the T. J. Mahony Road School, Construction and Maintenance program.

PURPOSE OF POSITION

Due to a vacancy, the Municipality of Grey Highlands is pleased to invite applications for the contract position of Transportation Operator. Reporting to TPS Team Leader, or the Supervisor of Operations if the Team Leader is absent, performs duties as directed to ensure safe operations and maintenance of municipal infrastructure, including all municipal roads, within Grey Highlands.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Safely maintains public transportation infrastructure, facilities and equipment for effective road maintenance and construction. This includes, but is not limited to:

• Operating heavy equipment such as plow trucks, graders, backhoes, etc. for the proper maintenance of municipal roads and proper disposal of waste (gravel and pavement, concrete, ditches, culverts, bridges, guardrails, guideposts, signs, brushing, and tree cutting).
• Responsible for winter road maintenance, snow plowing and sanding.
• Providing safe conditions for the public when on municipal lands by the removal of ice, rubbish, tree limbs or other debris with the appropriate placement of all waste material in designated locations.
• Responsible for safe construction practices (gravel placement, dust reduction, traffic control) and following direction from the Foreman and Supervisor of Operations

when completing road related tasks.

• Perform or support road patrols to assess road conditions and maintenance needs in accordance with provincial regulations and municipal policy as required.
• Responding to emergency calls (e.g., storms, accidents) to restore roads to pre-emergency conditions, subject to availability and in accordance with municipality policy.
• Report and record asset maintenance needs or repairs to team leader or manager in support of asset management. Assist with the maintenance of asset inventories and databases, as required.
• Construction and maintenance of Municipal trail networks.
• Maintaining equipment to ensure it is in good operational condition and safe for use.
• Communicating with the public in a tactful and courteous manner.
• Completing site logs, as required.
• Assisting other departments as needed.
• Performing other duties as assigned in accordance with corporate objectives.

Develops and maintains good working relationships with Council, staff and the public which includes:

• Complying with all office and maintenance shop procedures.
• Attending meetings and training when required.
• Participating in resolution of delivery service issues.
• Communicating ideas, suggestions, and procedural changes which may assist the organization.
• Assisting where and when needed during staff shortages and/or emergency situations.
• Responding and/or redirecting public inquiries and/or complaint to Director.

Responsible, as an employee, for health & safety under the Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA). This includes, but is not limited to:

• Working safely within the law and safe work practices/procedures (understanding and following standard operating procedures, wearing personal protective equipment, using MSDS information, ensuring all guards are in place, when applicable)
• Immediately reporting unsafe acts, conditions, or contraventions of the OHSA to a supervisor, the JHSC, or a Health & Safety representative.
• Maintaining a clean, orderly work area and avoiding any unsafe or disruptive behavior in the workplace.
• Completing all assigned health and safety training and taking the health and safety of themselves and others seriously by following workplace safety policies, procedures, and instructions.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Education and Experience:

• Completion of OSSD (Grade 12) or equivalent.
• A minimum of two (2) years experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment and machinery, preferably within a municipal setting.
• Experience operating a grader is required.
• Valid DZ Driver's License required; an AZ license would be an asset.
• Completion of, or willing to attend the T. J. Mahony Road School, Construction and Maintenance program.

Work Requires:

• Working knowledge of all applicable legislation, by-laws, and policies related to transportation services in a municipal setting.
• Working knowledge of the skilled operation of similar heavy equipment and machinery (grader, rubber tire excavator, backhoe, snow plow) and ability to make minor adjustments and repairs on equipment used.
• Ability to operate standard transmissions.
• Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment and initiative when dealing with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
• Ability to provide timely and courteous customer service.
• Good judgment and initiative and the ability to follow directions.
• Must be able to work independently and as a member of a team.
• Basic computer literacy and Microsoft Office skills,

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work involves a substantial amount of heavy lifting (40-50 lbs), carrying, crawling and climbing. Subject to the requirements of the OHSA, there may be times when the road maintenance operations continue in all weather, including severe conditions such as freezing rain, blizzards, and white outs with poor visibility and/or slippery conditions. A high degree of mental alertness is required to ensure the safety of oneself and others as working with heavy equipment, vehicles, unpredictable traffic conditions, road rage, tools and hazardous chemicals is required. There is a high risk of exposure to various risks such as dust, chemicals, smells, broken glass, and sharp objects, as well as the potential for slips when moving items. Hours of work are scheduled within the core operating hours of 7:00 A.M.- 3:30 P.M. with a half hour unpaid lunch break. The normal work week is 40 hours. Subject to availability, a flexible schedule is required to account for operational coverage outside of core hours, including emergencies, holidays, weekends, on-call, and seasonal shifts.
