1 year contract

Covenant House helps youth ignite their potential and reclaim their lives. As Canada’s largest agency serving youth who are homeless, trafficked or at risk, we offer the widest range of services to hundreds of young people every day.

Overview:

In this position, the candidate will be responsible for the direct implementation of Covenant House’s philosophy, mission statement, and policies related to residential care. The focus will be on youth mentorship within the Supported Lodging Program at Covenant House Toronto.

The successful candidate will reside in a private, fully furnished apartment provided and subsidized by Covenant House Toronto. This apartment includes 1 bedroom, an office space, full kitchen, ensuite, private entrance, and storage. No guests are allowed in this space for safety and privacy reasons. The candidate must be available to youth during designated hours, including overnights and weekends.

Responsibilities:
  1. Establish relationships with youth to provide mentorship, support, and life skills during their transition to independence.
  2. Document and communicate behavioral changes, concerns, and incidents.
  3. Encourage youth engagement in program expectations.
  4. Promote positive shared space activities for a successful communal living experience.
  5. Act as mediator for peer challenges and model collaborative problem solving.
  6. Conduct and participate in house meetings and weekly community meals.
  7. Collaborate with the Youth in Transition worker for case planning and post-program activities.
  8. Reside in the home and be available to youth during designated hours, including overnights and weekends.
  9. Commit to a minimum of 2-5 hours weekly for program activities, totaling at least 25 hours per week.
  10. Maintain a safe and clean environment.
  11. Monitor and report house maintenance issues.
  12. Respond to community relations issues and report complaints to the manager.
Qualifications:
  1. Post-secondary education, preferably in a helping profession (completed or in progress).
  2. Previous experience with high-needs populations in a mentoring role.
  3. Knowledge of trauma-informed care models and the needs of this youth population.
  4. Minimum commitment of 2 years.
  5. Full/part-time employment or student status.
  6. Initiative, independence, maturity, and critical thinking skills.
  7. UMAB, First Aid, ASIST, basic computer skills, and willingness to attend additional trainings.
