Job summary

Government of Alberta seeks a Contaminated Sites Regulatory Coordinator to oversee contamination management, communicate regulatory expectations, and support decisions under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act. Two full-time positions located in Edmonton or Calgary, with standard weekday hours.

Ideal candidates hold a science or engineering degree with at least four years of applicable environmental assessment experience, and may have a professional designation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering.
• Minimum four (4) years of applied experience conducting environmental assessment on contaminated sites.
• Equivalency: Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one-for-one basis.
• Two positions located in Edmonton or Calgary, working Monday - Friday, 36.25 hours per week.

Responsibilities

• Environmental Assessment - Apply expertise in environmental assessment process and procedures to evaluate contaminant distribution in soil, groundwater and soil vapour. Use systems thinking and technical knowledge to draw logical, evidenced-based conclusions based on presented data that supports regulatory decision-making.
• Risk Screen - Conduct holistic regulatory reviews of substance release information, exposure pathways and potential receptors to guide next steps. In consultation with leadership, determine appropriate soil and groundwater remediation guidelines, and if necessary, the expectations of risk management.
• Communicate Risk-informed Regulatory Expectations – Apply a risk-informed, outcome-based approach to provide clear and practical regulatory direction to stakeholders. Communicate technical and regulatory information effectively to a range of audiences.

The Contaminated Sites Regulatory Coordinator provides oversight for contamination management in Alberta. This role communicates regulatory expectations to stakeholders, ensuring alignment with provincial legislation including the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act and the Remediation Regulation, as well as applicable policies and guidance including the Alberta Tier 1 and Tier 2 Soil and Groundwater Remediation Guidelines.

• Environmental Assessment - Apply expertise in environmental assessment process and procedures to evaluate contaminant distribution in soil, groundwater and soil vapour. Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering or a related field. A profession designation as recognized by the Contaminated Sites Policy Framework is optional.

Experience: Minimum four (4) years of applied experience conducting environmental assessment on contaminated sites.

Equivalency: Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one-for-one basis.

There are two positions located in Edmonton or Calgary, working Monday - Friday, 36.25 hours per week.
