Job description

We are currently seeking Consumer Lending Lawyers to work with Canada’s largest in-house financial and banking institutions.

Responsibilities:

Working directly with and advising business clients to provide comprehensive legal counsel on a range of regulatory and transactional matters concerning payments systems and services for large financial institutions, including card issuing, ACH payments, mobile payments, card schemes, payment networks, gift cards, B2B payments, and emerging payment systems.

  • Draft, negotiate, and execute cards/payments documentation, marketing materials including Terms and Conditions, and contracts related to business legal matters in a dynamic environment.
  • Review compliance programs and provide strategic counsel on regulations such as the Bank of Canada Act, Financial Consumer Agency of Canada, AML, EFTA, and other provincial, federal, and international regulations.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to analyze proposed payment legislation and regulations and assess their impact on current or upcoming products.
  • Assist with complex transactions within the consumer finance sector, including lending transactions.
  • Provide legal counsel on payments systems and services, drafting related documentation.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of consumer lending experience within the financial services industry, with understanding of bank operations.
  • Experience advising on bank regulatory compliance, secured and unsecured lending transactions, and the Financial Consumer Protection Framework.
  • In-house or law firm experience advising banks, financial institutions, or payment-related companies.
  • Experience drafting and reviewing loan transactions, negotiations, structuring, and documentation.
  • Legal support on payments matters like merchant acquiring, card issuing, mobile payments, ACH, B2B, and emerging systems.
  • Strong understanding of applicable regulations such as the Bank of Canada Act, AML, EFTA, and others.
  • Member in good standing with your Law Society.
