Job description

Position Overview

This is a REMOTE position and can be either full-time or part-time.

We are seeking a Consulting Psychologist specializing in Disability Management and mental health to support Canada Life’s Group Disability Mental Health Strategy. The psychologist will provide leadership, solutions, and services related to absence and disability caused by mental health issues. This role involves collaboration with internal partners in Alberta to deliver innovative and positive outcomes for our customers and business.

Responsibilities
  • Provide mental health expertise to a dedicated disability management team in Alberta, working on a full or part-time basis.
  • Participate in weekly file review discussions with the case management team.
  • Identify files requiring in-depth psychological review and coordinate discussions with relevant stakeholders (e.g., Case Manager, Team Manager).
  • Review claim files to address questions related to impairment, diagnoses, treatment, and recovery.
  • Communicate with treatment providers to gather information and improve claims management.
  • Contribute to the development of disability management best practices.
  • Monitor emerging trends in mental health and recommend enhancements to claim management practices.
  • Suggest ongoing educational opportunities for disability claims staff.
  • Represent Canada Life in customer-facing meetings as needed.
Qualifications
  • PhD in Psychology and licensure to practice.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience conducting therapy.
  • Broad understanding of DSM-5 diagnostic criteria.
  • In-depth knowledge of diagnostic criteria for depressive, anxiety, PTSD, substance use, bipolar, personality disorders, and TBI.
  • Familiarity with mental health screening tools (e.g., GAD-7, PHQ-9, BAI, BDI, CAGE).
  • Knowledge of psychological tests like MMPI, PAI, Millon.
  • Excellent diagnostic skills to evaluate subjective and objective information.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based treatments (e.g., CBT, DBT, Exposure Therapy, IP, EMDR, Mindfulness, Substance Use).
  • Understanding of effective and ineffective treatment plans.
  • Strong business acumen with strategic, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
  • High-level communication skills to effectively explain medical information to non-medical staff and clients.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams.
Highly Desirable Skills
  • Leadership and coaching experience.
  • Knowledge of insurance medicine.
