The Department of Psychiatry at BC Children’s Hospital is seeking a consulting psychiatrist to work on the eating disorders inpatient unit associated with the Provincial Specialized Eating Disorders Program for Children and Adolescents. While this position is for 0.6 FTE, the successful candidate could augment their weekly work profile up to 1.0 FTE through involvement in other services within the mental health programs at BCCH.
The Provincial Specialized Eating Disorders Program for Children and Adolescents is situated within the mental health program at BCCH. This service is a multidisciplinary program specializing in assessment and evidence-informed treatment of children and youth ages 8 – 18 years with eating disorders and coexisting mental health diagnoses. The work is primarily clinical on the inpatient unit and is remunerated by combination of Fee for Service (MSP billings) and sessional support. There may be opportunities to participate in outpatient care and groups within the program. Previous experience in the assessment and treatment of children and youth with eating disorders is desirable.
As a consulting psychiatrist, you will work within a multidisciplinary team including Nursing, Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Dietetics and Adolescent Medicine. Consulting psychiatrists provide trauma informed care to children and families as well as clinical support and education to primary care providers, pediatricians and other psychiatrists across the province.
As an academically affiliated hospital BC Children’s Hospital Department of Psychiatry provides teaching and supervision to medical students, pediatric and psychiatry residents, and adolescent medicine fellows. While the position is primarily clinical, participation in teaching is encouraged and opportunities to be involved in research are also offered when available.
As the successful candidate for this position, you will have demonstrated a commitment to academic and clinical excellence as well as patient and family centered care in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. You will have passed or be eligible for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada examinations in psychiatry or comparable qualifications. You may have completed a recognized training program in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and have completed or be eligible to complete the RCPSC Child and Adolescent Psychiatry subspecialty certification examinations. The successful candidate will be expected to have or apply for a Clinical Faculty appointment in the Department of Psychiatry, University of British Columbia. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to work successfully in a multidisciplinary team environment and will demonstrate a trauma informed approach in their clinical work and professional relationships.

Background Information
The Department of Psychiatry, situated within BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH), is the only dedicated pediatric tertiary/quaternary care centre for the province of British Columbia serving a population of approximately 4 million people. The BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute (BCCHR) affiliated with BCCH, provides support to clinical investigators. UBC is the second-largest university in Canada 60,000 students (undergraduate and postgraduate). The medical school admits 288 undergraduates per year in a distributed program of education and has excellent funding for residency and sub-specialty training.
The Department of Psychiatry provides inpatient, residential and ambulatory care for children and youth through sub-specialty outpatient clinics, 3 inpatient units (emergency psychiatry, eating disorders, adolescent), 2 day treatment programs (child and eating disorders) and a community located eating disorder residential service for youth and young adults (16-24). The Department also provides a consultation service, Compass, to support community providers in provision of evidence informed care. All services are provincial in scope and provide tertiary/quaternary consultation to children, youth and families throughout BC directly on our site, via outreach, or via telehealth services. The Department includes a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Canada (RCPSC) accredited subspecialty residency program in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and is actively engaged in overseeing the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric core training for general psychiatry residents within the UBC psychiatry program as well as medical students in the UBC Faculty of Medicine. The Department of Psychiatry is affiliated with the BCCHR which has established Brain, Behaviour and Development as one of four major research themes. Through the affiliation with the BCCHR, the Department has established research strengths in neuroimaging, genetics, metabolism and clinical research.
