Network Rail Consulting in Canada is hiring a Junior Engineer on a permanent full-time basis. The role supports the consulting team in delivering high‑quality advice across complex rail projects and advisory commissions.

Responsibilities

• Support consultants in delivering technical and analytical work to client requirements, timescales and quality standards.
• Collect, organise and validate engineering, project and performance data from various sources.
• Analyse data to identify trends, issues, risks and opportunities, escalating significant findings where appropriate.
• Prepare reports, dashboards, visualisations and technical summaries for clients and project stakeholders.
• Maintain datasets, analysis files and project records in line with project controls.
• Assist with technical reviews, calculations and engineering deliverables under senior guidance.
• Coordinate inputs from different disciplines and support meetings/workshops by preparing materials and presenting analyses.

Hybrid Working

We work on a hybrid basis, splitting time between our Toronto office on University Avenue, our homes and client sites, depending on business needs.

About the role

Due to continued growth, we are hiring for an up‑and‑coming rail professional to join our team in Canada on a permanent full‑time basis as a Junior Engineer.

In this entry‑level consulting role, you will support the consulting team in the delivery of high‑quality advice and solutions across complex rail projects and advisory commissions in Canada.

In this role, you will travel to Edmonton for several days each month to work on‑site with our client. For the rest of your time, you will split your time between our Toronto office and your home.

This is an exciting opportunity to join NRC and play a key role in delivering complex rail projects and advisory services in Canada. You will work closely with clients and colleagues to provide practical expertise, solve complex challenges and help deliver high‑quality outcomes across a range of programmes.

You will also work alongside experienced rail professionals from around the world, including Network Rail colleagues on secondment from the UK, gaining insight from one of the world’s most established railway systems across major projects.

Key Accountabilities

In this role, you can expect to be doing the following:

• Support consultants in delivering technical and analytical work to agreed client requirements, timescales and quality standards.
• Collect, organise and validate engineering, project and performance data from a range of sources.
• Analyse data to identify trends, issues, risks and opportunities, escalating significant findings where appropriate.
• Prepare clear reports, dashboards, visualisations and technical summaries for clients and project stakeholders.
• Maintain accurate datasets, analysis files, project records and supporting documentation in line with project controls.
• Assist with technical reviews, calculations, options assessments and engineering deliverables under the guidance of senior colleagues.
• Coordinate inputs from different disciplines and support meetings and workshops by preparing materials, presenting analysis and following up actions.
• Manage assigned tasks and priorities effectively while developing your engineering, analytical and consulting capability through feedback, training and knowledge sharing.

Qualifications and Experience

To be successful in this role, you will typically demonstrate the following:

• A degree in engineering, data science, mathematics, computer science or another relevant technical discipline.
• Strong analytical skills, with the ability to collect, validate, interpret and present data accurately.
• Practical experience using Power BI to develop dashboards, reports and data visualisations.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical and analytical information to different audiences.
• A collaborative and approachable style, with the confidence to work effectively with colleagues, clients and stakeholders from different disciplines.
• Good organisation and attention to detail, with the ability to manage assigned tasks and priorities effectively.
• Previous experience, an internship or academic exposure within the rail, transport or infrastructure sector would be an advantage.
• Experience using Excel, SQL or other data analysis tools, together with an interest in engineering consultancy and professional accreditation, would be beneficial.
