The Opportunity:

A unique opportunity to live and work in the Canadian Rocky Mountains; WSP’s Canmore office is seeking a Construction Inspector & Contract Administrator to join our Land Development and Municipal Engineering team.

Based in downtown Canmore - complete with mountain views and just 20 minutes from the iconic Banff National Park, our team is responsible for a diverse range of work in the region, including but not limited to award winning and innovative Municipal, Civil Land Development and Transportation projects.

Coordinating and collaborating with our team to deliver projects on time, within budget and with quality results, the Construction Inspector helps to plan, organize, and monitor one or more local projects to see them come to life while meeting contractual requirements and design specifications.

Your primary responsibilities will be contract administration and field inspections related to construction of various types of municipal projects, however there will also be the opportunity to contribute to design work, drafting and project management for the right candidate, experience in any of these areas is considered an asset.

What you can expect to do here:

  • Act as part of a diverse team of project managers and engineers to deliver exciting projects;
  • Understand and interpret the requirements and details of the contract drawings and specifications;
  • Provide on site construction inspections and monitoring to ensure compliance with the design drawings, contract obligations and specifications;
  • Track project progress and maintain regular verbal and written communication with the design team, contractors and clients regarding project schedule, budgets, site issues and project quality and aid to resolve issues as required;
  • Act as a liaison between various project stakeholders and the WSP project team;
  • Be an active participant or lead construction update meetings;
  • Uphold safety of workers, the public and the environment through regular monitoring;
  • Participate in the preparation of tender procurement documents and evaluation of tender submissions;
  • Provide constructability reviews and assist with on-site design as/if required;
  • Lead efforts towards Construction Completion and Final Acceptance Certificates with support of WSP’s project manager and the design team.
  • Potential opportunities for design assistance, drafting (AutoCAD Civil 3D) and project management for the right candidate.


What you’ll bring to WSP:

  • 3+ years of experience (although all levels are encouraged to apply ) with municipal infrastructure construction, specifically with earthworks, sewers, watermains, drainage improvements, shallow utilities, roadway improvements, active transportation etc.;
  • Registration in good standing with ASET or APEGA, or eligibility to be registered;
    • Candidates not registered with ASET or APEGA that have a high school diploma and 5+ years of land development/municipal construction experience in the Canmore/Calgary area or mountainous regions will also be considered;
  • Highly motivated, hardworking and enthusiastic team player;
  • A strong aptitude for reading and interpreting engineering drawings and specifications;
  • Familiarity with local construction specifications, materials, methods and processes is considered an asset;
  • Computer skills including word, excel, PDF/Bluebeam markups and other Windows applications. Civil3D and AutoCAD skills would be considered a strong asset
  • A valid driver’s license is required for this role. The position may require use of a personal vehicle in good working order should a fleet vehicle not be available (mileage reimbursement is provided for use of personal vehicles for work);
  • A strong commitment to health and safety and following safety procedures;
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills and a flexible attitude are a must; and
  • Capable of working independently and as part of a team.

Although not required for the role, the following would be considered an asset:

  • Project Management / Project Coordination experience;
  • Design and/or drafting experience;
