The Opportunity:

WSP is currently searching for a dedicated Infrastructure Inspector & Contract Administrator to support our Land Development and Municipal Infrastructure team in Calgary.

The Infrastructure Group supports a diverse project portfolio, including but not limited to Civil Land Development, Transportation and Municipal Infrastructure.

This role requires coordination and collaboration with WSP teams responsible for delivering local projects on time, within budget and with quality results. Reporting to the various WSP Project Managers (PM), the Municipal Infrastructure Inspector helps to plan, organize, and monitor one or more local projects to help them meet the contractual requirements or design specifications.

Your primary responsibilities will be contract administration and field inspections related to construction of various types of municipal projects. You will have the opportunity to use your construction and contract knowledge to provide valuable input towards designs and tender documents during the winter months; experience in this area is an asset. At times there may be opportunity to also become involved in projects local to our Canmore office.

What you can expect to do here:

  • Act as part of a diverse team of project managers and engineers to deliver exciting projects.
  • Understand and interpret the requirements and details of the contract drawings and specifications.
  • Provide on-site construction inspections and monitoring to ensure compliance with the design drawings, contract obligation and specifications.
  • Track project progress and maintain regular written communication with the design team, contractors and clients regarding project schedule, budgets, site issues and project quality and aid to resolve issues as required.
  • Act as a liaison between the contractor, WSP staff, utility companies, local municipalities, developers, etc. as required.
  • Active participant or leading construction update meetings.
  • Upholding safety of workers, the public and the environment by reporting any contractual or regulatory infractions.
  • Participate in the preparation of tender procurement documents and evaluation of tender submissions.
  • Review and draft responses to Contractor’s request for clarifications, change requests, quotations and progress payment submissions.
  • Provide constructability reviews and assist with on-site design as/if required.
  • Lead efforts towards completion of construction completion and final acceptance certificates with support of the WSP team.

What you’ll bring to WSP:

  • 3+ years of experience with municipal infrastructure construction, specifically with roadway improvements, sewers, watermains, drainage improvements, shallow utilities etc. and be registered with either ASET or APEGA. Candidates not registered with ASET or APEGA that have a high school diploma and additional years of land development/municipal construction experience will be considered.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with Project Managers, Contractors, and Engineers in a spirit of cooperation.
  • Enjoyment of fieldwork in a high-paced environment. It should be noted that fieldwork is primarily local to the Calgary and Canmore area, nights away from home are not anticipated and fieldwork generally does not take place during inclement weather conditions.
  • Experience in project planning, risk management, cost management, schedule management and preparation/administration of contract documents and specifications.
  • A strong aptitude for reading and interpreting engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Familiarity with City of Calgary construction specifications, materials, methods and processes.
  • Computer skills including Word, Excel, PDF/Bluebeam markups and other Windows applications. Basic Civil3D and AutoCAD skills would be considered a strong asset.
  • A valid driver’s license is required for this role. The position may require use of a personal vehicle in good working order for business use should a fleet vehicle not be available, in which case there is reimbursement.
  • A strong commitment to health and safety and following safety procedures.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills; the ability to work well with people from many different disciplines with varying degrees of technical experience; competence in clear, concise and tactful communication (written and verbal) with Project Manager, clients, peers and other team members.
