Join our team as a Construction Engineer and take charge of vital highway and airport developments across Alberta. Reporting to the Construction Manager, the Construction Engineer leads the delivery of complex highway and airport projects—ranging from $50,000 to $200 million—from planning through to construction completion. With a focus on safety, quality, and stakeholder alignment, you’ll apply your engineering expertise and leadership to projects that directly impact Albertans across the province.

Your Key Responsibilities Include

  • Leading and coordinating engineering consultants and in-house specialists in project development and execution
  • Contributing to long-term infrastructure planning by supporting the department’s multi-year construction programs
  • Administering consultant agreements and managing tendering, design reviews, and contract documents
  • Supervising field operations, ensuring compliance with design standards, safety protocols, and environmental regulations
  • Monitoring construction progress and resolving issues related to cost, scope, schedule, and stakeholder concerns
  • Liaising with a wide range of stakeholders, including contractors, landowners, municipalities, and Indigenous communities
  • Contributing to innovation through trial projects that explore new construction materials and techniques
  • Participating in strategic planning and technical committees to help shape engineering standards and future programs

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (or related field)
  • Minimum five (5) years of related engineering experience
  • Registered or eligible for P.Eng. membership with APEGA
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s Licence or equivalent
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex, multi-disciplinary projects with tight deadlines
  • Strong negotiation and written and oral communication skills

Preferred:

  • Extensive knowledge of highway design, construction standards, and project management principles
  • Proficiency in interpreting construction contract documents and engineering specifications
  • Familiarity with departmental consultant guidelines and contract and project administration manuals
  • Understanding of land acquisition, expropriation procedures, and environmental permitting

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Additional Position Details

  • This position is a permanent, full-time role with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday (8:15 am – 4:30 pm).
  • Location: Provincial Building, 4709 44 Ave, Stony Plain, AB T7Z 1N4
  • Traveling will consist of less than 25% of the work schedule.
