Job description

Large Canadian general contractor is seeking an experienced Construction Director to join their growing team focusing on exciting transformative major infrastructure projects in Vancouver BC. Salary $300k+ plus benefits plus annual bonus. Outpost Recruitment is excited to work with our client on this full-time permanent role.

As a Construction Director, you will use your proven experience and technical expertise to be a leader in construction and project management, delivery, and excellence. Working on large-scale infrastructure projects up to $1 billion, you will have the opportunity to use your solution-focused and team-oriented attitude to lead a collaborative team of construction professionals.

Responsibilities, Experience, Skills of Construction Director:

  • Project Development
    • Assist in securing new work through participation in bidding and proposal teams.
  • Project Management
    • Responsible for delivery against all budget, schedule & quality targets
      • Establish safety, team, systems, and procedures to ensure a safe work environment for everyone involved in the project.
      • Develop, monitor, and make decisions to ensure the project is delivered on schedule.
      • Ensure key metrics and KPIs are established and targets are consistently achieved.
      • Responsible for all aspects of project closeout.
    • Commercial Management
      • Ensure teams understand and protect JV interests under the Prime Contract.
      • Ensure teams have a process to efficiently and effectively process change orders.
      • Financial/cash flow management.
      • Identify risks and implement mitigation and contingency plans.
      • Ensure everyone on the project has a commercial mindset to deliver the project at or exceeding budget.
  • Stakeholder Management
    • Create and maintain excellent relationships with all stakeholders including clients, architects, engineering firms, joint venture partners, and government.
  • People Management
    • Create and maintain a culture and environment that is open and respectful.
    • Hire, supervise, coach, and mentor project personnel.
    • Ensure project has capacity and expert capability in all engineering, procurement, and construction activities.
    • Communicate with Sr. Management to ensure adequate resources are provided.
    • Ensure the project has required staffing and succession plans.
  • Communication
    • Build engagement through ongoing communication with all staff and stakeholders.
    • Provide all required project reporting/forecasting.
  • Executive Responsibility
    • Act as an ambassador to employees, clients, partners, the public, and executive leadership.

Required Knowledge and Experience of Construction Director

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or similar.
  • A minimum of 20 years of construction leadership experience on complex major projects, with a proven track record of delivering commercial success.
  • In-depth expertise in civil construction with a solid understanding of rail systems.
  • Experience with complex contractual agreements and project financing.
  • 3+ years’ experience working on complex rail projects and stations.
  • Proven ability to successfully manage large and complex construction projects through the full project lifecycle.
  • Experience working on projects with international joint venture partners.
  • Thorough knowledge of change management principles including identifying significant variations and claims management.
  • Proven track record with claims management and dispute resolution on major projects.
  • Experience with risk identification and management.
  • Experience liaising with clients, subcontractors, and consultants.
  • Ability to effectively recruit and build teams and manage senior project staff.
  • Sound understanding of contractual, commercial, and financial functions on major projects.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Fluency in English is required (oral and written).

Requirements

  • Design-build experience on major projects ($1bn+).
  • Joint Venture experience.
  • Minimum 10 years of transportation/public buildings, healthcare experience.
  • 20 years of construction experience.
  • Buildings & civil/infrastructure experience ideal.

Compensation:

  • $300k+ plus annual bonus plus excellent benefits.
