Job description

Computer Systems Technologist - Level 2

The district operates 38 elementary schools, 10 secondary schools, alternative programs, continuing education, and other facilities. It enrolls approximately 21,000 students (K-12) and employs over 3,000 staff members.

This position involves coordinating technical work and services related to computer and networking services within the district. Responsibilities include developing standards and procedures, analyzing and resolving problems, planning and managing projects, and supporting computer systems, networks, administration, and end-user needs. This role differs from that of the Computer Systems Technologist by handling more complex and major projects. Reporting to the Assistant Manager of Technology and Information Services, the work is performed independently with minimal supervision.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

This list is not exhaustive.

  • Plan, design, test, maintain, and support computer systems and network infrastructure.
  • Monitor network and system activities, making adjustments to optimize performance.
  • Recommend strategies, policies, standards, procedures, and security measures for information technology.
  • Collaborate with school administrators, site contacts, and external agencies.
  • Provide advice, training, and support to users and technical staff regarding equipment operation and application use.
  • Prepare technical documentation for operational procedures.
  • Lead projects and supervise small teams working on assigned tasks.
  • Continuously upgrade skills to stay current with technological advancements.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Grade 12 or equivalent, plus a diploma in Computer Information Systems Technology or related field from a recognized institution, and at least seven years of relevant work experience, including four years of service work and project supervision, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Certifications in one or more LAN and WAN operating systems.
  • Certifications in one or more workstation operating systems.
  • Extensive knowledge of computer systems, current network operating systems, and network design practices.
  • Working knowledge of telecommunications hardware and software.
  • Experience with Active Directory, GPO, SCCM, Intune, Linux servers, and server hardware is an asset.
  • Ability to organize workload, work under pressure, and complete projects with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Physical ability to lift, push, pull, and move materials and equipment.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License.

Additional Qualifications

  • Knowledge of network cable installation, TCP / IP, subnetting, and VLANs.
  • Security+, Server+, Microsoft Security, or Identity Associate Certificates are assets.
  • Experience managing SCCM, Intune, JAMF, or VMware.

This is a union position, 40 hours per week, with an hourly rate of $39.03 plus benefits including health, dental, extended health, and pension plans.
