Job description

SMS Equipment continues to grow its Underground operations and is seeking a Component / Rockdrill Technician (Mechanic, Machinist or Millwright) to join our team in Val d’Or, QC. Fluency in French is required for this position.

This is a shop-based role, focused on component rebuilds and rockdrill diagnostics in a clean, well-equipped environment. Occasional travel to customer sites may be required. SMS will provide the necessary training for this position.

Base Wage: $47.28 per hour, plus applicable premiums*

Location: Val-d'Or, QC. Potential Relocation Assistance available

Schedule: 5x2

*Additional market premium and rockdrill premium brings rate to approximately $55.01 per hour. Other assignment-based premiums and allowances may apply.

What You’ll Do

• Perform full overhauls, diagnostics, and repairs on underground drifters—primarily Montabert and will also work with Sandvik and Epiroc.
• Diagnose malfunctions using proper testing equipment and provide recommendations based on repair needs.
• Complete a full inspection with precise measurements.
• Maintain detailed service reports, timecards, and warranty documentation.
• Travel to customer sites as needed.

What You Bring

The successful candidate will have completed their Diploma (DEP) or Red Seal certification in a Heavy Equipment Technician, Machinist or Millwright trade. Other levels of mechanical rebuild knowledge may be considered.

Other requirements include:

• Experience with bolters and jumbos is an asset.
• Strong diagnostic skills in hydraulic, electronic, mechanical, and electrical systems.
• Strong awareness and attitude towards workplace health and safety, including understanding and complying with all requirements.
• A commitment to maintaining and promoting a safe work environment.
• Modular Mine Worker Training (FMTM) – Modules 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7 is an asset.
• Individual General Explosive Permit through QC government is an asset.
• Proficiency with speaking and writing in English is an asset.
