Job description

Salary: Attractive salary plus benefits including car allowance

Our client is an award-winning civil and environmental engineering company delivering effective solutions for the maintenance and management of the UK’s waterways.

The company is restoring a wetland habitat, re-using material generated from in-house dredging operations on the Thames, and major infrastructure projects. The main site activity utilises the company’s own wharf to unload and transport materials from barges and manage their disposal once onsite. The jetty facility is an approved port allowing ships to be loaded/unloaded with bulk waste cargoes. Planning has been approved for a Soil-Washing Facility.

The company is looking to recruit a Compliance Manager to strengthen its existing site-based team to deliver operational and statutory requirements. This is an exciting opportunity to join the organization and be an integral part of the preparations.

The Role and Key Responsibilities:
  1. Managing the waste acceptance procedure from enquiry through to tipping for both restoration and wash plant operations.
  2. Interpreting and reviewing site investigation reports and laboratory analysis to classify wastes and determine acceptability in line with the company’s Environmental Permit and WAP.
  3. Ensuring sufficient sampling and risk assessing new sites/enquiries based on project/site history and waste process.
  4. Visiting prospective project sites in London and the Southeast with suppliers.
  5. Negotiating with clients to secure new projects.
  6. Developing new contacts and exploring different waste stream leads.
  7. Coordinating with Project and Operations Managers to manage projects/tipping on site, maximizing commercial viability while considering restoration plans.
  8. Completing quotes, Basic Characterisation Forms, and statutory paperwork for waste acceptance.
  9. Working with the operations team to ensure received materials are compliant and resolving any quality issues with clients.
  10. Overseeing ongoing training related to Waste Acceptance and facilitating communication to set standards.
  11. Promoting a culture of compliance and quality across the site as part of the management team.
  12. Preparing quarterly and annual reports for regulatory and permitting requirements.
  13. Coordinating on-site soil sampling and collecting samples for rapid and Mcerts/WAC sampling at third-party sites.
Candidate Requirements:
  1. Good knowledge of waste classification, with the ability to analyze and interpret laboratory data.
  2. Ability to work in accordance with Environmental Permitting Regulations and site-specific waste acceptance procedures.
  3. Experience building relationships and rapport with clients to maintain good working relationships and procure new projects.
  4. Experience providing regular reports to regulatory bodies.
  5. Understanding and balancing compliance requirements with commercial opportunities.
  6. Minimum of 2 years of field-based environmental testing experience or related project service experience.
  7. Ideally, a scientific degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Earth Sciences, or a related field.
  8. Proficiency in IT, especially MS Office, particularly Excel.
  9. Effective communication skills with clients and team members.
  10. Strong organizational skills.
  11. Proactive approach to HSQE.

This role is ideal for someone eager to gain hands-on experience, develop professionally, and enjoy a mix of office and field tasks.
